“Didier Lasserre was born in Bordeaux in 1971. His musical roots lie in free jazz and improvisation, which he has been practising for some twenty years, and to which many records and concerts throughout Europe and beyond bear witness. Paradoxically in relation to his work as a ‘free’ percussionist, he has always been interested in what is commonly known as silence, as well as in very gentle dynamics, worked on as a passageway to this silent zone. So, whatever instrumentarium he chooses and whatever name he gives it, he tries, whether premeditatedly or not, ‘to invent the instrument as it is’ (to borrow Robert Bresson’s phrase): attached above all to the quality and depth of the sound, to memory, to waiting, to forgetting, on these few vacant surfaces chosen for the occasion, and each time questioning the mystery of the passage of time. [...] Bertrand Gauguet is a musician based in Paris. He has been playing alto and baryton saxophones in solo or collective contexts of improvisation of new music. Also a composer of electronic music, he produced many original pieces and soundtracks for dance, cinema and radio. He also made field recordings for radio broadcasts, films and live performance devices. His interests explore the interplay of frequencies, multiphony, sounds at the thresholds of audibility, breath and more broadly sound as a medium for meditation. Das vor kurzem erschienene Album “Spectre”, bei dem beide nach zahlreichen anderen Kollaborationen wieder ihre Erfahrungen und Interessen in eine gemeinsame Waagschale werfen, hat aber auch etwas verhuscht-kontemplatives, das gespenstisch anmutet.

Den Rahmen des in sechs Abschnitte gegliederten Zyklus bilden die drei Teile des multiphonischen “Phonomnèse”, die dem Album mit einem diffusen Tremolieren zunächst einen eher ungewissen Auftakt geben, später mit an Orgel erinnernden Sounds ein kraftvolles retardierendes Moment bereithalten und am Ende in trostreicher Ruhe ausklingen lassen. An anderer Stelle, im zentralen “Point fantôme”, kommt ein zentraler Aspekt jeder Bläserei zum Zug, nämlich die nicht verschleierte Rolle des Atems, der hier kratzt und reibt und auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Exaltation wie dramatische Hufschläge donnert.

Hier sind schon Verstärker im Spiel, die in den zwei Teilen von “Étendue” am stärksten zum Eisatz kommen und einen Klangraum von flirrender Vibration bis zu prasselndem Lärm eröffnen. All diese Sounds eröffnen ihr spezifisches Charisma erst mit einer gewissen Vertrautheit und gewinnen mit mehrmaligem Hören an zusätzlicher Faszination. (A.Kaudaht)
