Gerade ist der von Blanck Mass komponierte Soundtrack zu dem Film „Ted K“ als Download auf Sacred Bones Records erschienen. Das Vinyl wird im Juni folgen. Der lapidar „Ted K“ bezeichnete Film skizziert des Lebens des ehemaligen Mathematikprofessors Theodore John Kaczynski, der als sogenannter Unabomber berühmt-berüchtigt wurde (und jüngst noch Erwähnung in Michel Houellebecqs jüngstem Roman „Vernichten“ fand). Durch die Bomben, die der in der Einöde Montanas lebende Kaczynski an Fluggesellschaften und Universitäten (daher die Bezeichnung Unabomber) schickte, starben zwischen 1978 und 1995 drei Menschen, gut zwanzig wurden verletzt. In seinem Manifest „Industrial Society and Its Future“, übte er scharfe Kritik an der modernen, technisierten Welt.

Zuletzt war Benjamin John Power, der Mann hinter Blanck Mass, für seine Musik zum irischen Drogendrama „Calm With Horses“ bei den The Ivor Novello Awards ausgezeichnet worden. Die Musik für „Ted K“ wurde während des Lockdowns in Powers Studio in Edinburgh aufgenommen:

„Recording during lockdown at his studio in Edinburgh, Scotland, Blanck Mass’s Ben Power was in the perfect setting for a musical piece intended to capture the isolation central to Kaczynski’s story. Power was also working with a director in a time zone 10 hours behind and thus many sessions required working in the middle of the night, which added a fitting intensity to the composition process. He said of the project “I wanted it to feel like an ‘epic’” and drew on the legends Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone for inspiration in encapsulating the energy of the perceived good vs. evil.

The gentle madness of sound achieved is exquisite and slowly builds in intensity and desperation as the score moves along. Power is able to perfectly capture the complexity, the terror and the deep emotionality of the film while presenting an often breathtakingly beautiful and always masterful album that stands on its own as a work of art.“

Mind Killer: Limitierte LP von Blanck Mass

Der schottisch Dröhner Benjamin John Power alias Blanck Mass, Mitglied der Combo Fuck Buttons, bringt zehn Jahre nach seinem Solodebüt eine LP mit einem in zwei Teile aufgesplitteten Livetrack heraus. Das repetitiv-technoide “Mind Killer” erscheint auf 1000 schwarzen Scheiben beim hauseigenen Label Weirding Way und wird außerdem über Sacred Bones vertrieben.

“Recorded in April 2020 at the beginning of the lockdown during the COVID-19 outbreak, Mind Killer is an improvised and original live-streamed performance by Blanck Mass. Using a core setup of the Korg VOLCA Series (beats, bass, sample & keys), the result is a 40+ minute long voyage into improvised techno and loop-work, warts and all. The only alteration is a slight edit in length so it fits onto a piece of vinyl.” (Weirding Way)
