Mitte Januar und somit anderthalb Jahre nach seinem vorigen Longplayer “On&On” erscheint Daniel Blumbergs Soundtrack des Spielfilms The World to Come, der bei den 77. Filmfestspielen von Venedig 2020 uraufgeführt und für den Goldenen Löwen nominiert wurde.

Die dezenten, im weitesten Sinne kammermusikalischen Themen orientieren sich kongenial am Auftritt der beiden Protagonistinnen, gelegentliche Eruptionen extremer Dissonanz, beispielsweise durch das Klarinettenspiel Peter Brötzmanns, akzentuieren intensive Momente. Neben Brötzmann wirken einige bekannte Größen aus klassischer, zeitgenössischer und alternativer Musik an der Umsetzung mit, so Josephine Foster (Gesang), Ute Kanngiesser (Cello), Steve Noble (Kuhglocken), Yoni Silver (Klarinette), Billy Steiger (Violine), Alex Ward (Klarinette) und Tom Wheatley (Kontrabass). Die Produktion übernahm PeterWalsh, der bereits mit Scott Walker arbeitete. Der Soundtrack erscheint digital bei Node Records/Wise Music Group und in den gängigen physischen Formaten bei Mute/[PIAS].

“‘The World To Come’ (directed by Mona Fastvold) premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. It stars Oscar-nominated actress Vanessa Kirby (‘The Crown’, ‘Pieces of a Woman’) and Katherine Waterston (‘Inherent Vice’),with Christopher Abbott and Casey Affleck in supporting roles. Set on a farm in upstate New York in the 1850s, the film is a frontier romance in which Abigail (Katherine Waterson), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbour Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) find themselves powerfully and irrevocably drawn to each other. Blumberg has created a bold score for the film which captures the passionate intensity of the lovers’ romance against a backdrop of extreme physical hardship in an unforgiving rural landscape.” (Mute)

Ende Juli bringen Mute / PIAS ein neues Album des Londoner Künstlers und Musikers Daniel Blumberg heraus. “On&On” ist ein Zyklus aus neun Stücken zwischen akustischer Kammermusik, Rockansätzen und Momenten schräger Intensität, die durchaus etwas derber ausfallen können, und stellt den Singer-Songwriter in eine Reihe mit Künstlern wie Antony and the Johnsons und Rufus Wainwright. Dem als Vinyl, CD und digital erscheinende Album liegt ein Essay von David Toop und ein Porträt der Fotografin Brigitte Lacombe bei.
“On&On – which follows 2018’s Minus, Blumberg’s debut for Mute – is a consolidation of the deconstructed song aesthetic he has developed, operating at the intersection between conventional song structures and free improvisation. Now he takes this further, incorporating recurring, shape-shifting motifs and at times dissolving the boundaries between songs altogether. Title track ‘On&On’ appears four times across the arc of the record as if coming in and out of focus, an infinite song that encapsulates the paradox of the circle, existing in a liminal space between perpetual motion and stasis, as Daniel sings: ‘On and on and on and on and on…’” (Mute)
