Room40 bringen in Kürze eine gemeinsame CD der beiden Gitarristen und Klangkünstler David Grubbs (US) und Liam Keenan (Aus) heraus. Die drei Duette entstanden während einer Australienreise Grubbs in Sydney. Das Album ist auch zum Download erhältlich.

“Remember hearing music while dreaming, fully confident that you’ll be able to reconstruct it once awake? Music that, as it turns out, you were the sole witness. In retrospect, why ruin the experience by something so vulgar as hearing it a second time, much less having to share it? We don’t mean to alarm you, but David Grubbs and Liam Keenan have returned from the dark side of the pillow bearing Your Music Encountered in a Dream. How did they do it? They did it by meeting to record a series of electric guitar duets in Sydney just as summer was turning to fall. They did it because Grubbs was limber and uncharacteristically chill after a couple of weeks in Australia playing shows and not playing shows. Sydney resident Liam Keenan’s comfort zone gravitates toward singing and songwriting under the moniker Meteor Infant, and on this session one genuinely senses an unabashed spirit of discovery. It’s happening, it’s really happening in these three generously scaled improvisations. Maybe The Necks — as well as solo recordings by Tony Buck and Chris Abrahams — count as unconscious reference points.

From the juggling and interplay of pitches in isolation, to the ecstatic speaking-together of strings, to guitar music as electronic music, there’s little in the way of searching for endings in this revelatory meeting. No hastening the dream’s end. Hail the first encounter”. (Room40)

Comet Meta: David Grubbs und Taku Unami mit ihrer zweiten Kollaboration auf Blue Chopsticks

Nach dem vor zwei Jahren erschienenen “Failed Celestial Creatures” bringen die beiden Musiker Ende Mai eine zweites gemeisames Album heraus. Die Musik auf “Comet Meta” rangiert von meditatzive Gitarren-Duetten über imporvosierte Klavierstücke bis zu Elektroakustik und dem Spiel mit gesampleten Sounds. Taku Unami hat Soundtrack für Filme von Regisseuren wie den Japanern Isao Okishima und Takeshi Furusawa komponiert und mit Musikern wie Annette Krebs, Radu Malfatti, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Jarrod Fowler, Toshiya Tsunoda und Graham Lambkin gespielt. David Grubbs ist und war Mitglied bei Gastr del Sol, The Red Krayola und Squirrel Bait und hat mit zahlreichen Künstlern wie Tony Conrad, Susan Howe, Pauline Oliveros, Ken Vandermark, Will Oldham, Andrea Belfi, Rob Mazurek und Mats Gustafsson gespielt – mit letzteren u.a. im Trio The Underflow, das für einen Abend im Athener Underflow Record Store existierte. “Comet Meta” erscheint beim Drag City-Sublabel Blue Chopsticks.

Comet Meta grew out of concerts in Seoul, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, with ground broken for this recording on a plane 35,000 feet above the East China Sea and in a tiny Risograph studio in Tokyo where they had to be extremely quiet. Neues Live-Album von David Grubbs, Mats Gustafsson und Rob Mazurek auf Underflow

Am 31. Mai dieses Jahres spielten die aus ganz unterschiedlichen musikalischen Ecken kommenden David Grubbs, Mats Gustafsson und Rob Mazurek ein vier Tracks umfassendes Set im Athener “Underflow”, das als Venue, Galerie, Plattenladen und Sitz des gleichnamigen Labels fungiert. Die Musik rangiert im Grenzgebiet zwischen Jazz, freier Improvisation und Noiserock mit einem Schuss Americana und basiert partiell auf bekannten Arbeiten der beteiligten Musiker. Ende des Jahres ein von Alex Inglizian gemasterter Mitschnitt des Konzertes, in dem Gitarre, Bariton-Sax, Trompete, Perkussion, Elektronik und diverse Holzblasinstrumente zum Einsatz kamen, bei Underflow auf Vinyl erscheinen.
