Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes: Soundtrackalbum von Cosey Fanni Tutti

Kürzlich konnte man in Berlin Caroline Catz’ Film über die 2001 verstorbene Mathematikerin, Komponistin und Gründerin des Radiophonic Workshops Delia Derbyshire sehen. Den Soundtrack zu dem Film komponierte Cosey Fanni Tutti. Dieser wird am 16. September auf Cosey eigenem Label Conspiracy International als Vinyl, CD und Download erscheinen.

„The new album includes the audio explorations and experiments that lead Cosey Fanni Tutti to the final soundtrack for Catz’ film. From the 4-minute long ‘Cornet Lament’ to the humorous ‘Snuff Chorus’ (which references an addiction that Derbyshire had for snuff), the album is a journey through both Delia and Cosey’s practise – Fanni Tutti spent time researching Derbyshire’s archives (both musical and the more personal ephemera of her life) to create an audio world for Catz’s depiction of the artist to inhabit.

Fanni Tutti explains, “The compositions are inspired by my research of the Delia Derbyshire audio archive, Delia’s original compositional notes and techniques which in combination with my admiration and love of Delia’s work provided a way to integrate her style and approach to music with my own. An alliance of our sensibilities.”

Wer sich näher mit Derbyshire beschäftigen möchte, der kann das mit Coseys am 18. August bei Faber erscheinenden Buch „RE-SISTERS: The Lives and Recordings of Delia Derbyshire, Margery Kempe and Cosey Fanni Tutti“ tun, in dem Cosey Parallelen zwischen Derbyshire, ihrer eigenen Kunst und Margery Kemp, einer Mystikerin aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, die die erste Autobiographie in englischer Sprache verfasste, aufzeigt.

The Myths and the Legendary Tapes: Dokumentation über Delia Derbyshire im Berliner Kino Lichtblick

Im Rahmen der Reihe “Female Currents” zeigt das Berliner Kino Lichtblick am 12. November den im vorigen Jahr fertiggestellten Film “The Myths and the Legendary Tapes”, in dem Regisseurin Caroline Catz dem Leben und der musikalischen Arbeit der Komponistin, Mathematikerin und Gründerin des Radiophonic Workshop nachspürt. Der semifiktionale Dokumentarfilm, in dem Catz in einigen nachgestellten szenen selbst die Künstlerin spielt und in dem auch Cosey Fanni Tutti als Remixerin von Derbyshires Archivaufnahmen auftritt, wird erstmals in Berlin und in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Soundwatch Berlin Music Film Festival gezeigt.
“Delia’s story is told through two archives: the first, a collection of lost works, 267 reels of quarter-inch magnetic tape recordings of Delia’s work found in her attic after her death, the other, her school books, paintings and keepsakes, discovered in her childhood bedroom. The combined archive, which now resides at Manchester’s John Rylands library, is an incredible resource of unfiltered material. Delia’s poetic collages and atmospheric soundscapes reveal themselves as intriguing expressions of her extraordinary inner life. The drama begins with Delia Derbyshire as a time-traveller and imagines a visitation where she brings with her fragments, objects and sounds from her past to bring her struggle and vision to life, finding solace in deeply personal soundscapes. Her struggle with alcoholism, frustrations at her contribution been downplayed in a predominantly male workplace as well as her intense artistic collaborations and life on the fringes of relationships are all explored in the film —all themes that collapse into sound, texture and harmonies.

Delia is portrayed through a mix of observation and imagination. No single perspective would be sufficient to gain a true understanding of Delia. The docudrama replaces biography and a biopic style with something more lyrical. Its playful, psychedelic mix utilises archival materials, interviews with her collaborators and dramatisations while honouring the BBC Radiophonic Workshops arranger-composer’s own questing spirit. This is a life story told through sound using both Delia’s own pieces of music alongside a soundtrack constructed from samples chosen with musician and performance artist Cosey Fanni Tutti from Delia’s attic tapes. It explores the fantasy of a collaboration, an exchange of ideas across eras between two fascinating musicians. It celebrates independence and imagination and looks at how, when that energy is evoked by women and creates a spark, the pattern seen throughout history is that it is often dismissed, ridiculed or downplayed.” (Anti-Worlds Releasing)

Sheffiled Doc Fest streamt Sisters With Transistors

Im Rahmen der Rhyme & Rhythm-Reihe zeigt das Sheffield Doc Fest am 31. Oktober den von Lisa Rovner gedrehten Dokumentarfilm Sisters With Transistors: Electronic Music’s Unsung Heroins. In dem Film führt Laurie Anderson als Erzählerin durch die Pioniertage der elektronischen Musik und legt den Fokus auf einflussreiche Musikerinnen wie u.a. Delia Derbyshire, Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Suzanne Ciani, Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Bebe Barron, Laurie Spiegel und The Space Lady, die erst in den letzten Jahren eine angemessenere Würdigung erfahren. Abgerundet wird der Abend durch eine Fragerunde mit der Regisseurin und ein zuvor aufgezeichnetes Konzert der Space Lady. Das Screening findet im Sheffielder Showroom Cinema statt und wird über die Homepage des Festivals gestreamt.
