Das genredurchbrechende Ensemble um den Komponisten und Multiinstrumentalisten Joshua Abrams kehrt zurück mit einer üppig instrumentiert Doppel-LP. “Since Time is Gravity” präsentiert das Kollektiv in erweiterter Form, denn neben dem harten Kern des Ensembles – Abrams selbst (Gimbri & Bass), Lisa Alvarado (Harmonium), Mikel Patrick Avery (Schlagzeug) und Jason Stein (Bassklarinette) – sind diesmal eine ganze Reihe an neuen musikalischen Gästen – Hamid Drake (Percussion), Josh Berman & Ben Lamar Gay (Kornette), Nick Mazzarella und Mai Sugimoto (Altsaxophone & Flöte), Kara Bershad (Harfe) und die in Chicago lebende Legende am Tenorsaxophon Ari Brown – auf den Stücken zu hören. Die Musik wurde live aufgenommen bei Electrical Audio & The Graham Foundation, das Album erscheint bei Aguirre und Eremite Records und ist auch digital erhältlich.

“Since first developing Natural Information Society in 2010, Joshua Abrams has been gradually expanding the group’s conceptual underpinnings, its musical references & the sheer number of the group’s members. Its music is, in a sense, an expansive form of minimalism, based in repeated & overlaid rhythmic patterns, ostinatos & modality. Its roots, its scale & its meaning become clearer in time. If time is gravity, it also allows us to carry more. Having begun as fundamentally a rhythm section with Abrams’ guimbri at its core, the version here can stretch to a tentet, including six horns. Abrams has been expanding his minimalism gradually, but he has long understood a key to minimalism’s potential: the breadth of its roots in the late 1950s & early 1960s, ranging from the dissatisfaction of young European-stream composers with the limitations of serialism to the simultaneous dissatisfaction of jazz musicians with the dense harmonic vocabulary of bop & hard bop”. Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy: Live-Album von Jeff Parker und seinem ETA-Quartett

Ende des Monats erscheint eine ausgedehnte Life-Aufnahme des renommierten Jazz-Gitarristen und Komponisten Jeff Parker und seinem aus Anna Butterss (Bass), Josh Johnson (Altsax) und Jay Bellerose (Drums) bestehenden ETA IVtt, laut Liner Notes von Michael Ehlers & Zac Brenner “2 LPs of long-form, lyrical, groove-based free improv”. Die Aufnahmen entstanden in den Jahren von 2019-2021 in der nach David Foster Wallace benannten ETA Bar in LA und wurden vom Kollegen Bryce Gonzales aus zehnstündigem Material auf die Länge einer Doppel-LP zusammengestutzt. Ferner heißt es: “Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy is a darkly glowing séance of an album, brimming over with the hypnotic, the melodic, & patience & grace in its own beautiful strangeness. Room-tone, electric fields, environment, ceiling echo, live recording, Mondays, Los Angeles. Jeff Parker’s first double album & first live album, Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy belongs in the lineage of such canonical live double albums recorded on the West Coast as Lee Morgan’s Live at the Lighthouse, Miles Davis’ In Person Friday & Saturday Night at the Blackhawk, San Francisco & Black Beauty, & John Coltrane’s Live in Seattle. Natural Information Society und Evan Parker live aus dem Café OTO

Joshua Abrams und seine Natural Information Society bringen im elften Jahr ires Bestehens ihren sechten Longplayer heraus, diesmal in Zusammenarbeit mit dem britischen Improv-Saxophonisten Evan Parker. Das One Track-Album “Descension (Out of Our Constrictions” von 75 Minuten Spieldauer ist gleichsam ihre erste Live-Aufnahme und wurde bei einem Konzert im Londoner Café OTO aufgenommen. In seiner (gerne als psychedelisch bezeichneten) Überblendung aus Einflüssen des Jazz, traditioneller Musikarten, Ambient und Minimal Music knüpft das Album an frühere Aufnahmen an und enthält neben Parkers Sopran-Saxophon von Abrams eingespielte Guimbri-Parts sowie Harmonium, Perkussion, Bassklarinette und diverse Soundeffekte. “Descension (Out of Our Constrictions” erscheint Mitte April als CD und Doppel-LP bei Eremite Records und Aguirre Records. Ein Auszug des Tracks ist bereits in einem Video von Bandmitglied Lisa Alvarado zu sehen.
