Die Stücke entwickeln sich organisch und entfalten Spannungsbögen zwischen meditativen Passagen, treibenden Rhythmen und eruptiven Momenten. Die Instrumente sind teilweise speziell für die Band von Expert Sleepers entwickelt, was The Shell erlaubt, komplexe Improvisationen ohne vorab aufgenommene Sequenzen oder Samples zu realisieren. Das Artwork der Gatefold-Hülle stammt von Carl Glover, das Album erscheint auf rotem Vinyl und digital.

Während sich die ersten drei Stücke – “Affirmation”, “Confession” und “Adoration” – zwischen hypnotischer Elektrifiziertheit und meditativer Konzentration entfalten, zeigt sich das abschließende “Meditation” als emotionaler Höhepunkt: hier verdichten sich die musikalischen Elemente zu massiveren Klangschichten und zu einem dramatischeren Ausdruck. Ostler arbeitet auf diesem Album mit einer ausgeprägten Sinnlichkeit für klangliche Texturen und Dynamiken. Die Arrangements bewegen sich zwischen Besinnung und Wucht, zwischen Zurückhaltung und kraftvoller Entladung. Dabei wirkt die Musik nie überladen, sondern bleibt in ihrer Struktur klar und nachvollziehbar. Ostler selbst zeichnet für Komposition, Aufnahme und Mischung verantwortlich und greift erneut auf Saxophon, modulare Synthesizer sowie eigene Orchester- und Chorarrangements zurück.

weniger perkussiv ausgefallen sind als der neue Longplayer, konzentrierte er sich vornehmlich auf eine zentrale akustische Klangquelle wie die Bassklarinette in “Crossing the Line”, Kontrabassklarinette in “Rolling Like A Bullet” und selbstredend Saxofon in “Four Drones For Saxophone And Modular Synthesizer”. Ostler selbst erwähnte, dass die initiale Idee zu dem Album gerade im Kontext klanglicher Fülle eine ganz andere war und der Arbeitstitel ursprünglich “In Search of the Smallest Possible Sound” lautete – ein Konzept, das im Laufe des Entstehungsprozesses verloren ging und auf einem zukünftigen Album zum Zug kommen soll. “Dots on a Disk of Snow” ist auch digital erhältlich.

“Late 2021, and lockdown has eased to the extent that it seems reasonable to organise gigs, albeit with some trepidation. After the big studio projects of “Crossing The Line” and “Rolling Like a Bullet”, this suggests a new approach for an album – a collection of tracks composed and rehearsed to be played live (at least in theory). To keep me honest, each performance destined for the album would be videoed and published on YouTube. Furthermore, in the interests of remaining a “mobile intelligent unit”, the setup should not involve too much gear – in particular, no laptop. For me, a modular synth has always been an adjunct to a computer, so it was useful discipline to come up with a modular system that could be the entire foundation of a performance, albeit supplemented by my saxophone and ever-growing pedalboard. As ever, these new needs provided invaluable feedback into Expert Sleepers product development.
During this time I was becoming increasingly interested in just intonation and related tunings, and the pieces here reflect that. The more I learn, the more I realise how entrenched equal temperament has been in my own education and subsequent thinking, and I can only presume the same applies to many, even most, others of my generation and culture. This, I believe, is a great shame. As I write, there are signs of cracks in the previously unassailable hegemony of 12 tone equal temperament, but there’s a long way to go. Zum neuen Album heißt es: “The soundscape is stark, open, at times ragged and jarring while at other times hauntingly beautiful. The album contains three extended pieces. The first two – It’s Clear From The Air and Qaanaaq – derive from the last performance of Darkroom’s 2012 tour: even after most of the audience had left, the band kept on playing into the night as the inspirational flow was so strong. Reviewing extensive recordings from rehearsals and the rest of the tour, one additional piece – Tuesdays Ghost – stood out for its controlled slow drone build and primal rhythmic electronic energy”.
