Divine Supplication: Kollaborative Songsammlung von Derek Piotr

Der aus Neuengland stammende Sänger, Musiker und Folkloreforscher Derek Piotr bringt im Mai und so ziemlich genau zwei Jahre nach dem Vorgänger “The Devil Knows Her” ein neues Album heraus, an dem eine ganze Reihe an Gästen – siehe Tags – beteiligt sind. Der Kulturwissenschaftler Dr. Michael Waugh von der Newcastle University schreibt: “Divine Supplication, Derek Piotr’s new release, is a deeply intimate work wrought from a series of personal tragedies. Yet while this opening description might elicit expectations of bleak navel gazing, the record is among Piotr’s warmest collections of songs to date. Despite its composition beginning in such an uncertain and fearful place, the completed pieces would ultimately come to be defined by the excitement of collaboration: Divine Supplication is Derek Piotr’s party album. Largely jettisoning introspection, seeking rather to heal through exploration and connection, Piotr has crafted an eclectic record whose lasting impressions are those of joy and play. Frequently surprising but never forcefully jarring, the choices made in terms of both collaborators and track sequencing serve to highlight the diversity of Piotr’s aesthetic concerns – now, yes, but also across his musical journey to this point. There are traces of the frivolity of Forest People Pop, the vocal distortions of Grunt, the emotional gravity of Avia, the folk de/reconstructions of Making and Then Unmaking and The Devil Knows How; here complementing and offsetting one another in new and unexpected ways”. Ryuichi Sakamoto ist Anfang des Jahres 70 geworden und anlässlich dieses runden Geburtstags erscheint am 2. Dezember auf Milan Records eine Zusammenstellung, auf der insgesamt 13 Künstlerinnen und Künstler Stücke Sakamotos neu interpretiert haben.“A TRIBUTE TO RYUICHI SAKAMOTO – TO THE MOON AND BACK vereint Künstler*innen verschiedener Generationen und Genres, die alle ihre jeweils eigene Beziehung zu dem ikonischen Musiker haben. Die Liste der auf dem Album vertretenen Künstler*innen reicht von heutigen Bewunderer*innen von Sakamotos Werk wie Thundercat, Devonté Hynes und Hildur Guðnadóttir über langjährige Mitarbeiter und Freunde wie David Sylvian, Alva Noto, Cornelius und Fennesz bis zu einigen von Sakamotos persönlichen Lieblingsmusiker*innen wie Lim Giong, Gabrial Wek und 404.zero; gemeinsam illustrieren sie mehr als nur den Einfluss Sakamotos auf die Musik unserer Tage. Alle Künstler*innen durften aus Sakamotos umfangreichem Werkkatalog, Solo-Platten und Filmmusiken, ein Stück auswählen, um dem Original einen eigenen Spin zu geben. Neue Halloween-Compilation von Geographic North

Unter dem Titel „A Little Night Music: Aural Apparitions from the Geographic North“ erscheint bei dem in Atlanta ansässigen Label eine umfangreiche Compilation anlässlich des anstehenden 31. Oktobers.

Die passende Zahl von 31 Künstlern, u.a. Fennesz, Louise Bock, Algiers, Gregg Kowalsky, Zelienople und Félicia Atkinson, steuern für das Doppel-Tape neue Tracks bei. Von Labelseite heißt es über die beteiligten Künstler: „some of the most alluring ambientists and outer auteurs from around the world.“ Der gesamte Erlös der Veröffentlichung geht an das Feminist Women’s Health Center.

Metzger Therapie präsentiert: Fennesz, Noveller, The Nent, Altaj im Silent Green-Kulturquartier, Berlin

Am 17. Oktober bringt das Label Metzger Therapie wieder eine illustre Bandbreite an Klangkünstlern nach Berlin, diesmal in das im ehemaligen Weddinger Kreatorium gelegenen Silent Green-Kulturquartier. Hauptact ist Christian Fennesz, der an dem Abend sein neues Album präsentieren wird. Sarah Lipstate wird mit ihrem Gitarren-Soloprojekt Noveller ihr Album “A Pink Sunset for No One” präsentieren. Eröffnet wird der Event von Francesco Vara, der unter dem Namen Altaj rituelle Ambient- und Drone-Musik spielt, gefolgt von dem Berliner Multi-Media-Projekt The Nent.

FENNESZ:
Christian Fennesz is an Austrian guitarist and composer active in electronic music, His work utilizes guitar and notebook computers to make multilayered compositions that blend melody and treated samples with techno-influenced production. Fennesz first received widespread recognition for his 2001 album Endless Summer, released on Mego Records. He has released a number of subsequent albums to critical praise, including 2004′s Venice, and has collaborated with a number of artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jim O’Rourke, Ulver, David Sylvian, and King Midas Sound.

NOVELLER:
Noveller is the solo electric guitar project of Brooklyn-based composer and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. Handling the guitar as her muse, Lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it’s housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer. Noveller has toured with Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, Radiolab, Xiu Xiu, the Jesus Lizard, U.S. Girls, & Aidan Baker. Lipstate has also participated in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, Ben Frost’s “Music for 6 Guitars” Ensemble, and Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble.

THE NENT:
The Nent is an Audio/Video project of Berlin based music composer and visual artist Vince Gagliardi. The sounscapes he builds are rised up from the fragile structure of inner emotions, to ultimately collapse into the enormous nothingness of the unknown. The new series of live “N_#” is the collision of different compositions, in which vast spaces and choking feelings are evoked by beating drums, tuned on a dark palette of sad memories and hollow sounds.

ALTAJ:
Altaj is Francesco Vara’s ambient/drone project, also guitarist in post-rock duo Tristan da Cunha. Altaj uses field recordings, guitars, drums, voice and effects to follow a sound research for unidentified, thick but liquid landscapes. The inspiration comes from Siberian shamanism, ecstatic voyages and divinities of the Asian highlands.

About the location:
The silent green Kulturquartier is an event venue and an independent project, which has found a unique home in the historic premises of the Wedding Crematorium in Berlin. Privately owned, silent green sees itself as a protected space for thinking, research and experimentation. Transformation is one of the key words guiding this endeavour: the intention is to move the boundaries of individual disciplines so that they can be interlinked in new, hybrid forms.
