Angeführt von den langjährigen Freunden und Bandgründern Stan Woodward (Bass) und King David-Ike Elechi (Schlagzeug), sind Knats für ihren “Geordie Jazz” bekannt, der durch “raffinierte Arrangements, starke Melodien und tanzbare Grooves” geprägt ist, wie es seitens des Labels heißt. Auf dem neuen Stück verbinden Knats cinematische Streicher mit funkigen Basslinien und Breakbeats, die ihre Einflüsse aus Dance und elektronischer Musik widerspiegeln. Kraftvolle Rhythmen und komplexe Arrangements lassen die vitale Trompete und geschmeidige Keyboard-Melodien, wie es bei Gearbox heißtm besonders hervorstechen. Der Song ist für Bassist Stan Woodward ein sehr persönliches Stück, das er seiner Mutter und allen starken, alleinerziehenden Müttern widmet. Die Band erklärt: “Sowohl Stan als auch King wurden von einflussreichen und widerstandsfähigen Frauen großgezogen, und der Song spiegelt ihre Bewunderung und Dankbarkeit für die Stärke und die Opferbereitschaft alleinerziehender Mütter wider”. Ihr zufolge haben sie sich vor kurzem auf einer Veranstaltung getroffen und sofort ihre beidseitige Liebe zu psychedelischer Musik aus asiatischen Ländern entdeckt und deshalb ihre Zusammenarbeit beschlossen. Bei Gearbox, die auch diesen Track digital veröffentlichen, heißt es: “Ai Kakihiras Sound [...] ist eine einzigartige psychedelische Mischung, die gekonnt Elemente aus Chillwave, Disco, Soul, Techno, Global Music und Dream Pop einbezieht. Mit zartem Gesang und Melodien, die in ihrer Muttersprache Japanisch gesungen werden, ist Kakihiras Musik voller dichter, aber komplexer dynamischer Arrangements.[...] Der neue Remix ist immer noch die Seele und der Körper von Kakihiras Originalwerk, aber aus der Sicht von MuchaMuchaMs säuregetränktem geistigen Auge. Hatakeyama, dessen Ambientarbeiten wir bereits vor einigen Jahren vorgestellt haben, benennt eine interessante Reihe an Inspirationen für die Komposition und die Aufnahmen des Albums: “It may not sound like much, but it’s free jazz, spiritual jazz. I love Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra. Conceptually, we didn’t prepare anything in advance, but chose to take inspiration from the place, the studio, the venue, the weather, the temperature of the day, and so on – the album is full of short improvisations. “Fading memories of intimate encounters laid out over busted late night electro-soul, ‘Pasadena’ is the new single by Bastien Keb; taken from his upcoming fourth album Organ Recital. Weaving an imaginative mélange of psychedelic-chamber-funk, warped anti-ballads and cinematic instrumentals; the album is conceived as a fantasy world to escape self-doubt and loneliness, fragments from everyday life continue to bleed through the cracks of reality – the harmony from a distant car alarm, someone’s headphones on the nightbus, rain on leaky roof, a decaying siren – to produce a dreamlike journey pieced together from half-imagined memories and late night inner-voice conversations. “Offworld was recorded during August 2020 on location in Sanna, Ardnamurchan, located in the most westerly point of the British mainland, within the Scottish Highlands. Over the course of a week, the duo lived, rehearsed and recorded together in the remote area of Sanna and would produce what would become their debut album. During the course of the recording sessions the duo’s intent was to combine their different musical languages and backgrounds – they met whilst studying classical (Kevin) and jazz (Graham) at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland – through a shared appreciation of minimalism. The entire album was treated as a ‘live session’ in an attempt to capture the spontaneity and improvised nature of the session and the immersive Scottish landscape.

Sanna Bheag is a house which was built in 1927 by M.E.M Donaldson, an English author and ethnographer, who was one of the first and only artists to document the rich and ancient Scottish culture of this community before it was changed forever by the second world war. Like the Celtic Bard before her, she immortalised a culture and way of life through her chosen mediums of writing and photography. Sanna is an honest reflection of the natural progression of music and art; it is constantly adapting and improvising with the consistent change in economical and cultural shifts as well as being a significant landmark of Scottish culture. These attributes directly link to the duo’s artistic intent, proving Sanna to be the perfect location to chronicle their own contemporary bardic and ethnographic interpretation of modern day Scotland and its cultural and artistic evolution.” (Gearbox)

Chiminyo’s tech-heavy drum kit set-up, combines the raw, immediate live sound of percussion and the futuristic timbres of his electronic productions to create his own, daring soundscapes. Via laboriously self-coded software, each cymbal crash and drum hit triggers a synth or sample, allowing Chiminyo complete control and freeing him of all loops, click-tracks and backing tracks.
