Der Sound von Hotel Kali entspricht einer reizvoll-verqueren und stets eingängigen Mixtur aus groovigen Disko-Rhythnen, stylischen 60s-Vibes, zackigem Minimalismus, hypnotischer Psychedelik und einem unbekümmerten Kolorit, das keine Scheu hat vor Zitaten traditioneller und traditionell anmutender Musik des vor musikalischer Vielfalt aus allen Nähten platzenden Subkontinents. Songtitel wie “Buntes Schwarz” oder “Calm/Storm” illustrieren die Quadratur des Kreises, die mit diesen hybriden Stil immer wieder zustande gebracht wird. Freunde des Goldenen Diskoschiffs im Hafen von Reykjavik dürfen sich über eine Neuinterpretation des Songs “Fake Horse” voll frickeliger Zeitrafferbeats freuen. Das Album erscheint als LP und digital bei Antime.

It’s a juxtaposition that runs throughout »Araceae,« thus enforcing the album’s overall themes of sensual experience and alienation. »Game of Biryani« for example lends some of its musical structures from pop music, calling into question traditional songwriting conventions which here reappear as irritating echo effects rather than recycled old tropes. With the lush »Limping over the Prairies« and the adventurous »Glow-in-the-Dark Gloves,« Stroetges further challenges her audience by applying noise and a heavy dose of autotune respectively to disorientating effect. All diese Assoziationen drängen sich auf und verschwinden doch gleich wieder, denn der Stil der Berlinerin, die ihr Projekt vor einigen Jahren nach einem ausrangierten Dampfer in Reykjavik benannte, zerfließt ständig in seinem Konturen, lässt all diese Eigenschaften vorübergleiten, ohne sie je zu einer festen Struktur gerinnen zu lassen.

Ihr drittes Album „Imaginary Boys“, das eventuell auf The Cure anspielt, erlebte seine Initialzündung vor anderthalb Jahren bei einem inspirierenden Aufenthalt in Portugal und wurde mit tatkräftiger Unterstützung von SchneiderTM am Mix und Rashad Becker am Mastering in Berlin vollendet. Was die Platte am offensichtlichsten von den Vorgängern abhebt, ist der verstärkte Einsatz von Streichern (Stroetges ist von Haus aus Bratschistin), eine fast leitmotivische Basslastigkeit und eine kompositorische Struktur, die – unabhängig davon, ob die jeweiligen Tracks eher songhafte oder eher zerfleddert-soundorientierte Formen annehmen – auf kontinuierliche Steigerung von Fülle und Intensität setzt. In einigen Stücken gipfelt das in narrative Stringenz, in anderen in erratisch wirkender Entgrenztheit.

In diesem Rahmen passiert so einiges: Melodien von orientalischem Kolorit breiten sich aus über triphopartigen Takten und diffundieren im dumpfen Klangstrudel, sanfte Vokalpassagen, so säuselnd wie eine leichte Brise, weichen kraftvolle Post Punk-Szenarien auf, folkig-ambiente Zupfgitarren kleben in Dada-Manier, extra für die Indie-Kids, an technoiden Rhythmen.

Golden Diskó Ship pflegt eine Ästhetik des Offenen und der untypischen Wendungen, und Zeilen wie „it’s a bee that doesn’t sting, it’s a present you can’t keep“, die in „Swarm of Bees“ melancholisch wirken, beschreiben auf die Musik selbst bezogen eine ihrer großen Stärken. (U.S.)

“Golden Diskó Ship is Theresa Stroetges, a Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist and video artist who performs live as a one-girl orchestra. Her imaginative soundscapes, shifting from delicate melodic lines steeped in nostalgia to the feedback arcs and textured distortion of machine abuse, evoke lucid dreams and have won critical praise for their fresh, eclectic collages of electronic and acoustic sound. Her debut solo album, Prehistoric Ghost Party, was produced at the legendary Faust Studio, home of the Klangbad label, and her tracks have also been released on Monika Enterprise’s City Splits # 1 and The Wire Tapper’s June 2012 compilation. The German pioneer of electronic music Conrad Schnitzler (1937–2011) amassed a vast archive of sounds for use in combination with each other in live performances. In 2011 the idea came up of con-structing new compositions, not remixes, from this material. The Con-Struct series was born. The second release of the series features con-structions by Schneider TM. “I am very happy and honored to be invited to do an album for the Con-Struct series and wanted to do something special and genuine in this posthumous collaboration with Conrad Schnitzler. I wanted to get as close to his spirit as possible, so I created a musical situation as if we were actually collaborating together in the same room, with Conrad playing his pre-recorded sound-files or modular system and me dubbing and processing it live on the fly… almost as if it was a live-concert situation.’”
