Im ersten Set präsentiert sich The S Trio, ein neu gegründetes Berliner Saxophontrio mit Chris Heenan, Ignaz Schick und Peter Van Huffel. Die Musiker, die mit Sopranino bis Baritonsaxophonen aufwarten, greifen auf individuelle Erfahrungen aus u.a. Jazz, experimentellen Ansätzen und freier Improvisation zurück. Dabei interessieren sie sich laut Programmtext vor allem für eine Weiterentwicklung jener Klangsprache, wie sie von Ensembles wie Rova, Anthony Braxtons Saxophonquartetten oder dem World Saxophone Orchestra geprägt wurde. Im Spannungsfeld von komponierten Strukturen und improvisierter Freiheit entsteht so ein innovativer und vielgestaltiger Zugriff auf aktuelle Saxophonmusik. Im zweiten Set begegnen sich der tschechische Akkordeonist Vojta Drnek, die Pianistin Isabel Anders und der Kontrabassist Meinrad Kneer in einer Besetzung, die, wenn man ihre bisherigen Arbeiten kennt, klanglich weit über klassische Triokonstellationen hinausgehen dürfte.

The Lappetites, das internationale Künstlerinnenkollektiv bestehend aus Antye Greie-Ripatti (AGF), Kaffe Matthews und Ryoko Akama, wird die Bühne mit einem Set für Live-Elektronik betreten. Im Programmtext heißt es: “Projekte der Band beinhalten etwa eine Klangsynthese auf Basis fiktionaler Texte oder die Übersetzung biologischer Evolution in Sinuswellen. Kaffe Matthews’ jahrzehntelange Erfahrung mit raumbezogenem Live-Sound, Ryoko Akama’s klangliches Feingefühl am Synthesizer und AGF’s digitale und vokale Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten eröffnen ein dynamisches und grenzenloses Klangspektrum”.

“Rotary Perceptions II is a new composition for 8-12 turntables and 4 performers as well as one person who takes care of the sound diffusion. With Rotary Perceptions II, Ignaz Schick is now picking up on the thread of “Rotating Surfaces” again, but this time the focus is not so much on the sound-generating objects as in his 2004-2013 set-up, but on the surfaces them- selves. For a while now, Schick has been experimenting again with cut-outs, surface notches and stickers (adhesive tape, furniture stoppers, etc.) that are applied to records or cardboard, wood and metal discs. Rotation and scanning by pickups and (prepared) needles can be used to create cyclical, repetitive patterns and loops through to beats and grooves. Depending on the materiality of the glued-on elements and the type of pick-up or pick-up system, a wide variety of sounds and rhythmic patterns or textures can be created. Any number of rhythmic patterns and grooves can be created through the carefully selected spacing of adhesive strips, stickers or cuts. “In the last 20 years an incredibly multi-faceted & adventurous experimental music scene has evolved in Berlin. The scene currently consists of several generations of protagonists and a vast stylistic spectrum ranging from Improvised Music, Free Jazz, Echtzeitmusiik, Electronica, Noise, Sound Art, Electro-Acoustic Music to composed Contemporary Music with fluent crossovers into the vital club scene (Electronica, Techno, Dubstep, Breakcore, Ambient).

Many musicians of this younger Berlin generation are working with electronics or electro-acoustic devices. The working methods of these musicians/composers are as multifarious as the stylistic results of their music. There are artists who focus on improvisation, others are composing or building installations. Some work with complex and precisely elaborated (custom programmed) software, others rely on analog synthesizers and old oscillators. Some are using self-made objects or instruments while others work with pre-produced field recordings or base their work entirely on found materials like old vinyl records or sampled sound archives. Another characteristic of the Berlin scene is its strong international interconnection and attraction. In recent years, musicians and composers from all over the world have been moving to Berlin with the aim of engaging with and enriching the vital musical discourse.

FLUX Festival will present a one week festival of new pieces and works from some of the most important players of this vibrant music scene. Each afternoon invited artist will give a short lecture talking about their working methods and musical approaches. Evening concert sets follow where artists present new pieces commissioned especially for the festival. With 4-5 sets nightly and a maximum duration of 25 minutes per performance, the festival surveys a mosaic-like overview of the current experimental electronic music scene in Berlin. We aim to present the scene in all its complexity with the intention to build evenings of diverse, contrasting music. As a venue we have chosen Spektrum in Neukölln – a rather small and compact room with an intimate and concentrated listening situation.The program can be seen as both inventory and retrospective of 20-25 years of electro-acoustic music in Berlin. All concerts will be recorded and we are planning to release a CD-Box of the entire festival.”
