Konzipiert, komponiert und produziert von Brooks und Mare, entstand die Platte über einen längeren Zeitraum. Die Beats sind geprägt von rohen, staubtrockenen Drum-Breaks und einer unheilvollen Atmosphäre. Dälek stehen seit Ende der 90er für eine explizit politische Haltung. In der Tradition von Public Enemy und The Bomb Squad entwickelte die Gruppe eine eigene Form des Hip-Hop, die Rap mit Noise-Elementen und einer deutlichen Experimentierfreude verbindet. Zum neuen Album sagt Will Brooks: “When you listen to this, I hope you walk away with hope because we’re still fighting, building, and pushing.” An anderer Stelle betont er den Einfluss der aktuellen politischen Lage und verweist auf die Bedeutung von Widerstand und aktiver Teilhabe. “Brilliance of a Falling Moon” erscheint als LP und zum Download.

Dale Crover prominente Verstärkung ins Boot geholt. Mit dabei sind diesmal Roy Mayorga (u.a. Ministry, Soulfly), der als zweiter die Felle traktiert und so mit Crover den Grundstein vieler Songs legte, ferner Gary Chester (We Are The Asteroid) an der zweiten Gitarre. Das fünf Tracks umfassende Album beginnt mit dem knapp zwanzigminütigen “Pain Equals Funny”, das zusammen dem lärmigen “Working the Ditch” zu den Höhepunkten des Albums zählt.

“The songs on this album invoke imagery,” sagt Lombardo. “I write from wherever my mind travels. I write how I think. I want the songs to conjure emotion. There are no lyrics, but there are many levels of intensity. In a way, I think I’ve found a hidden talent. That is, taking mental images and putting those images to music. [...] It’s a combination of improvisational and composed music,” he says. “My ideas start freeform and as I develop them, they seemingly take on a life of their own. During the writing process for Rites of Percussion, everything developed slowly with layered instrumentation until I had a song that, in essence, spoke to me. [Mike] Patton originally gave me the idea as far back as 1998. He introduced me to Tito Puente’s Top Percussion album. I was already familiar with Tito and was a bit shocked that Patton was so musically diverse, and that he surrounded himself with musicians of the same mindset. That inspired me. I have had ideas that I’ve recorded on cassette over the years, but Patton kept insisting that I had to do a ‘drum album.’ So, the idea behind the album is years in the making. “Whether one considers the booming, echoed-out Oberhiem DMX drum beats that helped Run DMC’s “Sucker Mcs” usher in a new paradigm in Hip Hop or Public Enemy transforming Robert McCollough’s high-pitched sax squeal into a siren call for a new take on the politics of Black power, rap music has long employed noise as a weapon of rebellion. A renegade sound born from an outlaw culture, rap music has both historically and contemporarily pushed against established notions of musical acceptability. This sonic rebellion shows up in the form of absurdly loud 808s, speech elevated to the centre of a vocal performance or samples that are mangled and obscured beyond any possible recognition of their original source material. Coupled with its broad rejection of conventional social norms, the sound of rap music itself is un-extractable from its political stance. It is the music of the oppressed. A music where the fight for liberation plays out within the beats and rhymes itself.

For Union City, NJ-based duo, Dälek, this stance has taken the form of a brutal sonic temperament that pushes rap music’s capacity for noise and protest to some exhilarating conclusions. For their latest album, Precipice, Dälek unleashes a work that is practically bristling with fury and power. Stretched over 10 tracks, the production is among the heaviest in the group’s catalog with its dense, violent beats often giving way to gorgeous waves of texture and ambience. The album opens like the sounding of an alarm with “Lest We Forget”, a brief but captivating ambient piece pulsing within a thick coat of distortion.

Dälek spielen einen Sound, der in guter Public Enemy-Tradition sehr auf Soundkollagen gebaut ist, zu ihren Charakteristika zählen ein organisches Klangbild, das rau belassen ist und doch einen gestalterischen Stilwillen erkennen lässt. Dazu kommt immer wieder eine weiträumige Suspendierung typischer Hiphop-Rhythmen durch allerlei kalkuliertes Chaos, in welchem sich dann auch das Andockpotential an zahlreiche „experimentelle“ Musikarten findet. Will Brooks alias MC Dälek ist ein Meister der effekstarken Zurückhaltung, lässt sich gerne in den vielsagenden Zwischenbereich zwischen Rampe und Hintergrund mischen und hat an Vokalakrobatik nur mäßiges Interesse. Zur abgeklärten Stimmung an der Grenze zum Downertum würde etwas anderes auch kaum passen.

War das in den 90ern entstandene „Negro, Necro, Nekros“ noch Ausdruck einer stilistischen Selbstfindungsphase, so hatte die Crew mit „From Filth…“ ihren Sound bereits gefunden und zur Variation freigegeben. Von den Producern Mike Swarmbots und rEK stets mit Sinn für Feinheiten aufbereitet, gebärdet er sich zeitgleich wie hinter einer matt eingefärbten Glasur, so im Opener „Spiritual Healing“ (das später im Zu-Mix ein Eigenleben bekam) oder in „Speak Volumes“, einem von mehreren Metatracks, die das Rappen und Scratchen nebst Attitüde selbst zum Thema haben. Zu den größten musikalischen Fähigkeiten zählt ihre Kunst, Kleinteiliges, Heterogenes, Vertacktes immer in Bewegung und so in Spannung zu halten, was aufeinanderprallt, lässt neue Klanggebilde entstehen, was auseinanderdriftet, endet vielleicht ganz plötzlich in einem wilden Strudel oder verbindet sich zu etwas überraschend neuem. Am meisten Spaß machen fraglos die besonders rumpeligen, unaufgeräumten Stücke wie „…From Mole Hills“, bei dem sich der Zeremonienmeister durch einen Schrotthaufen aus Metallklappern und hintergründigem Dröhnen windet, oder „Heads“, das wie eine NWW-Kollage startet und in einem puren Noisegewitter endet. Fast brav dagegen das Geschrammel a la My Bloody Valentine in „Classical Homicide“.
