Die Musik bewegt sich dabei, wie es ferner heißt, in einer Art gedehntem Jetzt: zirkulär, ständig in Bewegung und ohne ein lineares Fortschreiten zu behaupten. Diese Haltung schlägt sich auch in der Art nieder, wie musikalisches Material entsteht – als gemeinschaftlich geformte, über das gesamte Ensemble verteilte Phrasen, die sich falten, wiederkehren und neu formieren. Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger “Ephemeralds” (2023, Fönstret/Edition Festival) verdichtet “Kalpa” die formale Arbeit weiter. Die neue Besetzung öffnet den Raum für komplexere Interaktionen zwischen den Instrumenten: akustische Stahlsaitengitarre, Klavier, Kontrabass, Violine, Cello und Schlagzeug. Die Auseinandersetzung mit mikrotonalen Strukturen bleibt ein zentrales Element, ebenso die genaue Auslotung von Klang, Stille und Resonanzräumen. Die Beteiligten zählen durchweg zu den markanten Stimmen der freien und zeitgenössischen Musik in Schweden, darunter Lisa Ullén (Klavier), Vilhelm Bromander (Kontrabass) und Ryan Packard (Schlagzeug). Dennoch resultiert diese Vorgehensweise in einer Musik, die nichts auch nur ansatzweise Verwaschenes an sich hat, sondern stets markante Konturen bewahrt und bisweilen geradezu exponiert. “The music remains hard. A chiselled, gleaming beauty, but one hung in a precarious assemblage of rhythmic co-dependence”. Auch diese paradox anmutende Verbindung von Flüchtigkeit und Härte findet sich im Titel wieder. Bei all dem ist auch der Hörvorgang immer im Fokus: “With Ephemeralds, the act of listening both invokes and displaces our memories, phrases and combinations slip away at the very point they coalesce creating a feeling of simultaneous movement and suspension-in-place where everything happens in the moment of nothing really happening and nothing happens in the moment of everything happening”. “Reading Music is a platform for collaborations within the field of experimental music. The project seeks to gather and create synergies between composers and improvising musicians with an interest in open-ended graphic scores and/or other hybrid scores and the performing arts.
