All Losses Are Restored: Gemeinsames Debüt von Stian Westerhus und Maja S. K. Ratkje

Ganz bald erscheint die erste als Duo konzipierte Zusammenheit von Maja S. K. Ratkje und Stian Westerhus, die zu den heute renommiertesten Musikerinnen und Komponisten Norwegens gehören und bereits in zahlreichen meist größeren Konstellationen zusammen auf der Bühne und im Studio standen. 2019 traten sie erstmals als Zweiergespann beim Oslo Jazz Festival auf und überraschten ihr Publikum mit einem rein akustischen Set. “All Losses Are Restored”, auf dem beider Stimmen gleichermaßen prominent zu hören sind und das zahlreiche Traditionen von Jazz über Musiktheater, Kleinkunst und Americana-eingefärbte Songwritermusik wie eine sich ständig wandelnde und überblendende Fata Morgana aufscheinen lässt, ist nun das Resultat dieser ästhetischen Entscheidung, wie es

beim Label heißt: “To many of their followers’ big surprise, Stian Westerhus and Maja S. K. Ratkje, who are usually associated with effect pedals, samplers, amplifiers and computers at three digit decibel levels, put aside all things electric and performed an acoustic set at Oslo Jazz Festival in 2019. Ratkje and Westerhus, now armed with a 19th century pump organ, fiddle, acoustic guitar, some metal scrap and their voices, have gradually composed, developed and expanded their new and unique repertoire, performing at concerts, for Norwegian national broadcasting (NRK), and are now releasing this album – All Losses Are Restored”. Dabei entdeckten die beiden auch ihre gemeinsame Liebe zum Werk Shakespeares und entschlossen sich, die Sonetten und Tragödienstoffe des Barden von Stratford zum Ausgangspunkt des Albums zu machen. Ein Songentwurf aus Westerhous’ Feder existierte bereits, alle weiteren Kompositionen entstanden gemeinsam. “A Shakespearian wind hit the two as they were looking for inspiration moving on from their first live appearance in 2019.

Would it make sense to combine their new musical expression with the mystical, brutal and flowery universe of William Shakespeare’s words? So many songs have already been made, so much music, from large staged works and inspired instrumental works to miniatures. A never-ending textual source. Divine Supplication: Kollaborative Songsammlung von Derek Piotr

Der aus Neuengland stammende Sänger, Musiker und Folkloreforscher Derek Piotr bringt im Mai und so ziemlich genau zwei Jahre nach dem Vorgänger “The Devil Knows Her” ein neues Album heraus, an dem eine ganze Reihe an Gästen – siehe Tags – beteiligt sind. Der Kulturwissenschaftler Dr. Michael Waugh von der Newcastle University schreibt: “Divine Supplication, Derek Piotr’s new release, is a deeply intimate work wrought from a series of personal tragedies. Yet while this opening description might elicit expectations of bleak navel gazing, the record is among Piotr’s warmest collections of songs to date. Despite its composition beginning in such an uncertain and fearful place, the completed pieces would ultimately come to be defined by the excitement of collaboration: Divine Supplication is Derek Piotr’s party album. Largely jettisoning introspection, seeking rather to heal through exploration and connection, Piotr has crafted an eclectic record whose lasting impressions are those of joy and play. Frequently surprising but never forcefully jarring, the choices made in terms of both collaborators and track sequencing serve to highlight the diversity of Piotr’s aesthetic concerns – now, yes, but also across his musical journey to this point. There are traces of the frivolity of Forest People Pop, the vocal distortions of Grunt, the emotional gravity of Avia, the folk de/reconstructions of Making and Then Unmaking and The Devil Knows How; here complementing and offsetting one another in new and unexpected ways”. Maja S. K. Ratkje mit Aufnahmen ihrer Installation Vannstand

Die norwegische Klangkünstlerin Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje bringt ein Album mit acht Auszügen ihrer Installation “Vannstand” heraus. Die Arbeit befasst sich mit den Gezeiten an der norwegischen Küste im Medium einer Vielzahl von Klänge, die auf klassische und elektronische Instrumente ebenso wie auf Stimme und gesampleten Sounds basieren. Ratkje selbst entwarf v.a. das Konzept und brachte die fertige Installation durch verschiedene Bearbeitungsschritte zum Abschluss. Ein Großteil der Soundmotive stammen von Kindern, die ihre Assoziationen und ihren persönlichen Bezug zum Meer, zum Wasser generell und der Küste musikalisch reflektierten. “Vannstand” erscheint als LP bei Motvind Records.

“Vannstand, commisioned by nyMusikk, started in 2015 and was in the years that followed set up as sound installations in different versions in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Harstad and Bodø. This album is a mix of 8 excerpts from those installations. Ratkje has been an outspoken voice on environmental issues for years. Vannstand is a continuation of this commitment where she unites new music and the inheritors of our planet. She uses local sea level measurements to create scores, which in turn are interpreted musically by children. She has done a tremendous job editing their contributions into a multidimensional piece that balances tension, clearity, beauty and playfulness.

One would imagine a piece regarding such enormous concepts as tidal waves (generated by the Moon’s gravitational pulls) and changes in sea levels (affected by weather systems and climate changes) being a rather loud and harsh affair. Maybe this insinuation is connected to the impressive body of work she has done with noise music. Vannstand is in any case filled with subtle and precise fragments of grand dramas and sweet melodies. Over eight movements, the music is growing with close interplay and sudden shifts. The sound mix, based on the 8 channel sound installations, is exquisite, obviously done by the composer. The life-giving sea has been the basis for growth and development, and now human influence is changing the seemingly eternal cycle along the Norwegian coast.” (Motvind)
