“Studio Dan has been engaged in various configurations with Anthony Braxton’s extensive body of work since 2016. While widely known as a phenomenal saxophonist and bandleader, his recognition as a composer, particularly in Europe, has been slower to emerge. On Braxton et al., Studio Dan presents a chamber music approach. The conceptual starting point for the album is Anthony Braxton’s Composition No. 107 for two multi-instrumentalists (wind or brass) and piano (1982), which forms the basis for the subsequent compositions. Initially performed by a finely balanced trio – Clemens Salesny, Daniel Riegler, and Michael Tiefenbacher – the ensemble explores the varied combination of instruments, including saxophone, trombone, piano, bass clarinet, tenor horn, and Fender Rhodes. As the program progresses, the band expands into a quintet with Raphael Meinhart (drums/vibraphone) and Manu Mayr (double bass), experimenting with high-energy dynamics in symmetrical and microtonal sound spaces. The ensemble delves into the form of “comprovisation” that Braxton contributed to the contemporary music canon, where free jazz and serial music are no longer opposites”.
