“I don’t care that much about the alchemy that some artists generate combining LPs, communicating with the ghosts of the past, that kind of thing. I love it when other people do it. In my own case, I’m really interested in the materiality of the plate, the tactile and hyper sensitive way sound is extracted from it, the signal to noise ratio and its condition of radical flux that you get with dub plates. What I’m doing there is adjacent to music-making, but I often think it might not be strictly speaking, about getting to the best sound, if that’s what musicians are understood to be doing, by and large. My approach has something of carrying out exercises to it, to what end I’m not entirely sure, but on a personal level, I would say, some strange synthesis of formalism and kind of physical intimacy.”

Marina Rosenfeld is a multidisciplinary artist whose works have probed the intersections of experimental practices in sound with performance, installation and sculpture since the 1990s. As a composer for dance, Rosenfeld has created live improvised music for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company between 2004 and 2008, and composed original scores for choreographers Ralph Lemon and Maria Hassabi. In the contemporary music field, she has created works for the Holland, Borealis, Wien Modern, Time:Spans, Maerz Musik, Vancouver, Pro Musica Nova, Donaueschingen and Ultima festivals, among many others. Rosenfeld has also performed as an experimental turntablist since the late 1990s. Her collaborators have included Christian Marclay, George Lewis, Okkyung Lee, Ikue Mori, Annette Henry aka Warrior Queen, Ben Vida, DJ Olive, and Christoph Kurzmann, among many others too numerous to list. Rosenfeld has been the co-chair of the MFA in Music/Sound at Bard College since 2007, and has been a visiting professor in sound, sculpture and performance at Cooper Union, Harvard, Yale School of Art, and Brooklyn College. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.Ben Vida lives and works in New York, where he is a visual artist, composer, and musician working in sound, performance, video, installation, and 2D work. He has been an active member of the international experimental music community for two decades. In the mid-1990s, Vida co-founded the minimalist quartet Town & Country and released solo records under the moniker Bird Show. He has released records on numerous labels including Alku, PAN, Root Strata and Kranky, and his most recent work Reducing the Tempo to Zero was released on Shelter Press. Vida teaches in the MFA program in Sonic Arts, Brooklyn College.
