“Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics, introduced in the early 1940s, apply well today, in a world where “technology now exists to create autonomous weapons that can select and kill human targets without supervision”. We need to set limits. Or to challenge them, like algebraic topology does with our intuitive concept of equality. Unmapped lands, once marked with lions and dragons, are now digital artefacts on Google Maps. Fact-checking can help you debunk a Wikipedia entry, or make you travel to the upper Euphrates valley, where an old man will show you the oldest Bible ever found – if it isn’t a forgery. Speaking of fake news: What is information independently from meaning, and what are its limits?

This brings us to computer chess, on which the father of information theory, Shannon, published a groundbreaking paper in 1949; years later, IBM’s Deep Blue would defeat Kasparov in a momentous ‘human vs. machine’ competition. ELDER SISTER
Jane Paik’s current project, Elder Sister, is a stripped down musical landscape inhabited by guitars, off-kilter rhythms and magnetic tapes, constructed of composed and shattered/improvised songs that highlight her unique voice and interaction with text and sounds. Live shows are dynamic and hybrid, employing a stage presence that sets her apart from most traditional, or even non-traditional, performers and musicians.
Delivered to you from the oceanic land of California, Los Angeles native Jane Paik can now be found habitating in the City of Magic – Torino, Italy. She has toured and travelled all over the United States and a number of other countries throughout the 90s and early 2000s, performing on bills with diverse acts such as Kim Gordon, Deerhoof, Liars, Joanna Newsom and Lucky Dragons in all spots from contemporary art museums and rock clubs to hole-in-the-wall punk spaces.

“Occulto is happy and honoured to present the next OvO live performance in Berlin, as part of the tour that launches their latest album “Creatura”, out on Dio Drone (with a beautiful Artwork by Coito Negato based on a concept by Stefania Pedretti as cover). The duo composed by Bruno Dorella and Stefania Pedretti has been playing a big role in the Italian as well as international underground scene and keeps on evolving and challenging any definition with each release and each live performance. Opening act by the Berlin based bass/drums duo amigo tropical, that we have just discovered at a recent gig in Lichtenberg and fell in love with. It will be a night of mighty noisy rock, experimentation, disturbing and enchanting voices and powerful drums – possibly the best way to start our 2017 Occulto Night season.

OVO has always been one of the most active bands in the worldwide noisy rock scene. They have been known pretty much everywhere through their 900 and more gigs, their large amount of releases, including albums, singles, collaborations, tracks on compilations, dvds, and for their original, unique music. They’re a duo, formed by a little possessed singer and guitar player (Stefania Pedretti) and an enormous drummer who plays a mini-set like it was a full metal drum set. Their live performances are legendary, and they’ve played them all over the world, with extensive tours in Europe, North America, Mexico, Asia, including a lot of the main festivals. What they do is not easy to file. It’s not noise, not metal, not doom, not punk, not rock and roll, even if there’s a little bit of all these. Certainly it’s not free nor avant nor improv. For once, we can really say that it’s a band you can’t file. After some full lengths on their label Bar La Muerte, they release albums on American labels such as legendary Load records and Blossoming Noise, then two albums on Supernatural Cat. Their new album “CREATURA” will be released by Dio Drone. They collaborated or played with the most important names of contemporary experimental rock music, and they worked for cinema projects (Frankenstein, Nosferatu) and theatre (“Aeneis V” by Lenz). “CREATURA” continues and developes their research on mixing heavy music with electronic sounds in a natural and personal way, keeping them as a mysterious object in the worldwide scene for 18 years.

THISQUIETARMY X PHILIPPE LEONARD: DRONE GUITAR RITUAL X DUAL16MM PROJECTIONS

An opportunity to see in action Philippe Leonard, influenced by the great tradition of North American experimental cinema, whose practice on film (16mm and 35mm) led him to important collaborations, including the contribution to the visuals of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and the pioneering Thisquietarmy music project. The Canadian duo works in great synergy on the possibility of expanded cinema. An alchemy of cinema and sound, working on the matter and on devices (16mm film projectors/electricity, guitar and pedals) for a journey that explores the possibilities hidden in the image and its serial essence.

THISQUIETARMY

Montreal-based project active since 2005, pioneering the experimental music scene emerging from Canada. Revolving around improvised guitar drone and by combining textural & structural elements of ambient/noise, electronic/shoegaze, post-punk/krautrock, black/doom metal, thisquietarmy creates an impressive wide range of dynamic soundscapes which oscillates between the beauty of repetitive dreamy minimalism and the heavy suffocation of multi-layered noisescape and industrial beats, as presented in its prolific discography comprising of over 30 releases on more than 20 different labels including Denovali Records, Aurora Borealis and Shelter Press. thisquietarmy has recorded collaborations with Aidan Baker (Nadja), Scott Cortez (loveliescrushing), André Foisy (Locrian) and Labirinto, among others, and has taken part in other projects such as Hypnodrone Ensemble, Destroyalldreamers, Mains de Givre & Parallel Lines. He performed in more than 30 countries in North/South America, Europe & Asia, including appearances at Nemo Digital Arts Biennale (France), Incubate Festival (Netherlands), Le Guess Who (Netherlands), Dunk! Festival (Belgium), Amplifest (Portugal), Zemlika (Latvia).

PHILIPPE LEONARD

Canadian experimental film-maker, based in Montreal. His artistic practice focuses on still and moving images, through film, photography, performance and installations. His theoretical and aesthetic reflections focus on the complex temporality of still and moving images, the spectral dimension of physical spaces, and expanded documentary practices. Distributed by Light Cone and CFMDC, his work has been showcased in notable international contexts, such as the 16th WRO Media Biennale (Poland), Rotterdam International Film Festival (Netherlands), Anthology Film Archive (New York), Galerie Michel Journiac (Paris), Cineteca di Bologna (Italy), European Media Arts Festival (Germany), O ‘Gallery (Milan), Museo Nitsch (Naples), Struts Gallery (New Brunswick), Annecy International Animated Film Festival (France), Galerie Les Territoires (Montréal), etc. As a cinematographer, he is involved in artistic, documentary and commercial audiovisual projects, using a broad range of cameras and formats: Super 8, 16mm, 35mm, HD, etc. Philippe Leonard emphasizes a mastery of both analog and digital techniques to create moving images. In 2013, he was awarded a residency at the MIT Media Lab to study under the mentorship of the late Harun Farocki. He is a member of the Montreal collective of experimental cinema Double Negative and Millenium Film Workshop in New York City.

MARIMBA

Marimba is an ongoing side project by Paul Jones (Cindytalk, Mothership Convention, Stolen recordings) and Elia Buletti (Delmore fx, Das Andere Selbst). They met in Berlin on 2013 and share since then a multitude of interests and diverse influences from metaphysical bacterium to gate compression. They’re creating instinctive natural sonic forms that evolve through improvisation and derangement of all the senses.

The OCCULTO NIGHT series brings good independent music in Berlin with a focus on experimentation, cross-genre projects, rare performances and new material; it is informed by and closely connected with the vision and interdisciplinary attitude of the yearly science and arts publication Occulto.”
