Premier Rapport: Gemeinsamer Longplayer von Quentin Rollet und François Galland

Mit “Premier Rapport” erscheint in Kürze das erste gemeinsame Album von RG, dem Duo aus Quentin Rollet und François Galland. Das Projekt RG, dessen Kürzel eigentlich aus den Initialen der beiden Teilnehmer besteht, in Frankreich allerdings unweigerlich an den Geheimdienst “Renseignements Généraux” erinnert, steht bei den beiden Musikern jedoch für das Gegenteil: ein offenes musikalisches Gespräch ohne Geheimnisse. Kennengelernt haben sie sich 2022 bei einer Improvisationssession im Pariser Club Chair de Poule, wo sofort eine besondere Verbindung spürbar war. Wenig später arbeiteten sie in einem choreografischen Projekt zusammen, ehe 2024 erste Studioaufnahmen entstanden. Ein Konzert im “Tony Collectif”, ergänzt durch intime Sessions im Studio, bildet nun die Grundlage von “Premier Rapport”.

Quentin Rollet, der seit seiner Jugend Saxophon spielt und das Instrument über Jahre hinweg in den Kontext freier Improvisation gestellt hat, ist als Musiker unter anderem mit Nurse With Wound, The Red Krayola oder Mendelson aufgetreten. Er betreibt außerdem das Label Bisou. François Galland kam über Punkbands und Experimente mit Kassetten zur elektronischen Arbeit; sein modularer Synthesizer ist für ihn das ideale Werkzeug, um Improvisation und Klangforschung zu verbinden. “Premier Rapport” zeigt RG in einem Spannungsfeld aus schrägen, hypnotischen Klängen, in dem sich akustisches Instrument und elektronische Texturen in wechselnden Rollen begegnen Das Album erscheint it Artwork stammt von Xavier Mussat als CD und zum Download beim Label reQords.

Collapsus: Kollaboratives Album von Guillaume Loizillon

Auf seinem Trace Label bringt der französische Experimentalmusiker, Wissenschaftler und Hochschullehrer Guillaume Loizillon dieser Tage sein neues Album “Collapsus” heraus, das über einen Zeitraum von rund drei Jahren mit zahlreichen Gästen im Mailart-Verfahren realisiert wurde. Zu hören sind Michel Bertier, Bony Bikaye, Andrew Crocker, David Fenech, Blaise Merlin, Emiko Ota, Ben Ritter, Federico Rodriguez, Quentin Rollet, Laurent Saiet und Hervé Zénouda. Anfangs als etwas entworfen, das vom Label als Ambient Carbonic Techno bezeichnet wird, entwickelten die Aufnahmen in den Händen der verschiedenen Teilnehmer schnell ein Eigenleben. Dazu heißt es: “About twenty electronic sequences were created using modular synthesizers or audio software (Max msp, Voltage modular, VCV rack, etc.). These were sent to a dozen of artists: musicians or/and authors, who volunteered to participate in the project. They responded by sending in contributions made in their own workspace. Others came along for the recordings”. Die zwischenzeitlich eingetretene Pandemie hat auch im Arbeitsprozess von “Collapsus” seine Spuren hinterlassen: “Started just a few weeks before the explosion of the pandemic, during these two years of gestation, the project was of course affected and questioned by these events. During this complex and depressing period, the initial conceptual framework, centered on collapse and an ironic-derisory imagination, evolved without disappearing. A refocusing and a certain rede nition have taken place.”

Quentin Rollet und Andrew Sharpley als The New Me

Zeitgleich zu Quentin Rollets russisch-französischem Quintett Shampanskaya bringt sein Label ReQuords zusammen mit den britischen Test Recordings das aktuelle Duett des Saxophonisten mit dem Producer Andrew Sharpley heraus, dessen elektronischer Beitrag zum gemeinsamen Debüt “The New Me” schlicht unter dem Begriff Computer angegeben ist – ein klanglich vielgestaltiges und meist feinsinnig gestaltetes Werk, das um plötzlich Schrillheiten nicht verlegen ist und in wenigen Tagen auf CD und als Download vorliegt. Das Artwork basiert auf Arbeiten von Andrew und Lia Sharpley.

“I have known Q since 1998, when I first went to Paris and played with Noël Akchoté, who was the other half of the Rectangle label with Quentin. We went to the same parties and knew the same people, but somehow never played together. We have both known and followed each other’s work for 20 years now, so it was pretty easy on this album, for us both to do our thing at the same time, and somehow it fitted. Perhaps because it has our own separate histories inside it, which have been loosely connected – socially, if not musically – for some 20+ years.

This album was made remotely under COVID lockdown in 2020. All Quentin’s saxophone parts were recorded in a studio in Paris, he sent them to me and I put them together with my electronics at home in the countryside in North UK. But most of it sounds as if it was recorded live, with us playing together in the same room. I have always liked this kind of ambiguity – what’s live/improvised vs what’s edited/written that you spend days or weeks over. This record has both, but you can’t really see the joins. Working under lockdown, when you have no way of seeing the other person, or even being in the same country, it makes the whole idea of ‘live’ vs ‘ studio’, made vs played irrelevant. Shampanskoye: Alexei Borisov, Jérôme Lorichon, Olga Nosova, Quentin Rollet

Unter dem Motto “Shampanskoye” (= Champagner) sind die Musiker Alexei Borisov, Jérôme Lorichon, Olga Nosova und Quentin Rollet – allesamt leidenschaftliche Kollaborateure, die Studio- und Bühnenerfahrung mit Ghedalia Tazartes, Nurse With Wound, Jandek, Mia Zabelka, The Red Krayola u.v.a. gemacht haben – sind zum gemeinsamen Jam ins Studio und haben mit Stimme, Gitarre, zwei Saxophonen, Elektronik und diversen Effekten improvisiert. Das Resultat ist ein summendes, hauchendes, rasselndes, rumpelndes, klapperndes und rauschendes Kaleidoskop von einem Album inklusive Artwork von Oleg Kornev. Es erscheint in den nächsten Tagen bei Rollets Label Reqords.

“Alexei and I met in the 90’s when he was touring in Europe and when I was co-running the Rectangle record label. We became friends but never played together at that time. Every time he came to Paris, we only met for a few hours. When I heard he had a day off from his tour with ASTMA (the duo with Olga Nosova), I thought it would the opportunity to eventually meet musically. On that day Jérôme Lorichon and I were supposed to be working on our duo set, so we transformed that in a double-duo recording.
