Die ursprünglich 2009 erschienene Aufnahme, so Verleger Lawrence English, gilt als frühes Beispiel jener reduzierten Felt-Piano-Ästhetik, die später von zahlreichen Künstlern aufgegriffen wurde. “Polaroid Piano” versammelt eine Reihe kurzer Klavierminiaturen, die wie musikalische Momentaufnahmen funktionieren – nah am Instrument aufgenommen, ruhig, entspannt, atmosphärisch und offen für die Klänge ihrer Umgebung. Einige Stücke enthalten Field Recordings von English, der das Album auch masterte, während Gitarrist Muneki Takasaka auf mehreren Tracks zu hören ist. Die Neuauflage würdigt ein Werk, das mit seiner stillen, unmittelbaren Klangsprache bis heute nachwirkt. Das Album ist auch digital erhältlich.

“I was waiting for the bus to arrive at the stop when the rain started pouring. I quickly escaped into a chapel nearby, and that’s where the idea of this album came to be. Inside the chapel, I was reminded of the scent of Mauritius, where my father was from, and the pillars of dampen woods mixed with the ritualistic frankincense. The rain continued to hit violently on the metallic church roof as the road outside grew overwhelmed with angry drivers, honking their way through, their frustrations echoing through streets of skyscrapers in Hong Kong. They sounded like a piece of nostalgic happening, infusing sounds that I was most familiar with in this sacred architecture. This was when I decided to compose a series of work, featuring eclectic sounds of my city. Also inspired by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, whom I revere, his exercise of restraint and Eastern philosophy led me to explore the ambience that made up my daily life, experimenting and reconstructing them with familiar instrumentations. In “Tropical Church”, you will experience music composed of piano, ambient electronics, shakuhachi, Chinese yuan, guzheng and spoken words, which I think represent my feelings for home — Hong Kong. And to me, home is an old church that harbours a myriad of unspoken emotions, flowing from the West to East. Complex history hidden within the dampen pillars, the sounds of the city and the footsteps of the everyday people that liven up the streets. Most notably in the first track, “I am afraid of”, voice recordings of anonymous strangers were collected describing their deepest fears. “On Nova Naturo, Japan’s Haco expands her already divergent song craft into a zone that meshes field recording, electronics and layers of floating voice into an imagined sound environment that encourages a sense of a deepened interior terrain. Haco’s work in groups including the now legendary After Dinner and Hoahio have earned her a unique and respected position in the Japanese music communities, but it is with her solo work that she has unlocked an utterly unique and deeply personal approach to sound. Drawing inspiration from mythologies surrounding ideas of rebirth, Nova Naturo propagates a sense of ambience, but arrives at this sensation without dwelling in the aesthetics of ambient music. Rather, Haco combines unexpected elements, and uses these combinations to refocus our ears and invites us to listen closely, but with a sense of relaxation. “Maybe the turbulent sky itself is singing – blue sky, intense bright sky, dark moon sky – its many voices emanating from frozen rain drops, pollen carried by breezes, insects too small to see with the naked eye, hummingbirds, leaves as they fall from trees, mist that shrouds the world in mystery yet speaks of a new nature, without a body yet with many bodies. A voice is floating, almost within reach, travelling as if a physical being, moving far away yet always here, so close as to be inside, spinning inside each lantern, flickering light.” (David Toop)

Seinen Blick richtete er wie zu erwarten vor allem auf die vielfältigen Geräusche der Umgebung, nahm sie auf, ließ Erinnerungen Gestalt annehmen, die er wiederum mit improvisiertem Gitarren- und Banjospiel in Klang übersetzte. Als diverse Effekte und die Beiträge befreundeter Musiker hinzu kamen, konnte daraus gar nichts anderes als ein äußerst vielschichtiges Bild entstehen.

Bei dem sanften, fließenden, manchmal stockenden und oft verträumt und verbummelt anmutenden Saitenspiel, das trotz folkiger und countyesker Elemente an continuous music erinnert, mag man recht früh zu dem Schluss kommen, dass der eher dankbare als schwermütige Blick in die Vergangenheit, die nie verklärende und doch anheimelnde Stimmung beim Aufspüren des Vergangenen im Hier und Heute die Grundstimmung des Album bestimmt. “Alexandra” ist ein Werk von beiläufiger Schönheit, und man kann sich bei dem entspannten Saitenpicking gut vorstellen, wie der Musiker in den Straßen und Parks, an Bachufern und in Einkaufszentren eher den kleinen Dingen auf der Spur war, die erst mit der Zeit bemerkenswert erscheinen, wenn die verschüttete Erinnerung zurückkommt, mit der sie behaftet sind. Das ändert sich auch bei den kurzen, aufgeweckten Banjopassagen nicht, die einen für Momente aus dem passtellfarbenen Tagtraum holen und dem Klischee nach so gar nicht nach Australien passen.

Nur gelegentlich, bei lat krakeelenden exotischen Vogelstimmen oder dem raunenden Stimmengewirr in einer Mall lugt so etwas wie Spannung um die Ecke – die Alexandra Hills scheinen in Tuttles Kosmos kein traumatischer und auch kein betont sehnsuchtsbehafteter Ort zu sein, aber er ist auch keineswegs belanglos.
