Der Nukleus von Magam ist der in Thessaloniki lebende Musiker, der sich moody alien nennt. Über diesen erfährt man, dass er sich der Musik und den Komponisten- und Producer-Künsten rein autodidaktisch angenähert hat, was der angejazzten Improv-Musik des nicht ausschließlich griechischen Kollektivs, bei dem er für die meisten „untraditionellen“ Bestandteile verantwortlich ist, natürlich keinen Abbruch tut. Kohärenz und eine markante Signatur bekommt man manchmal am ehesten mit der Erfahrung und durch den Einsatz von viel Herzblut.

Auf dem lapidar „Another“ betitelten Zweitwerk der Band treten dunkle, Spannung erzeugende Motive und ihre mal gechillten, mal heiteren Gegenparts in einen vielgestaltigen Dialog, der selten kämpferisch und meist verspielt wie ein flirtiger Tanz anmutet. Am offensichtlichsten tritt dies in den das Album rahmenden Songs zutage – im Opener durch den unaufgelösten Zwiespalt von filmscorartigem Dröhnen und Rumoren und wunderbar smoothen Saxophonstrichen, im Schlusstrack durch das beinahe Verschmelzen dröhnenden Gepolters mit hochtönender Euphorie zu einer undurchsichtigen Stimmung. Ein Kreis scheint sich zu schließen, doch Titel wie „That Little Flame“ und „Not With People Still Standing“ klären darüber nicht wirklich auf, lassen vielmehr diffuse Short Stories vorbeiziehen.

Im Laufe der sechs Songs kann man immer wieder den Eindruck bekommen, dass hier kaum etwas ausgelassen wird. Bedrohliche Drones, holziges Klappern, jazzige Snares, Glöckchen und computerspielartige Elektronik – gerade die Sound Art-Elemente sollten nicht übersehen werden, denn sie bilden oft das erst einmal unscheinbare Fundament, dass der Musik ihre charakteristische Färbung und den organischeren Sections ihr Fundament gibt. Hauptperson am vorderen Bühnenrand ist dennoch das Saxophon. Mal stimmungsvoll wie in den Rockkontexten der Villagers of Iannonia City oder La Piramide di Sangue, mal von fast zu besinnlicher Milde, mal luftig langgezogen trillernd oder brattelnd kommt ihm stets die Rolle des charismatischen Exzentrikers zu.

Aufgenommen wurde das Album an verschiedenen Orten in Griechenland, Spanien, Frankreich und in einer rumänischen Kirche – womit wir wieder bei der anfangs erwähnten Kohärenz wären, denn auch dies tut ihr nicht den geringsten Abbruch. (A.Kaudaht)

Montreal-based electroacoustic composer Jeremy Young’s new record is more like a suite of meaningful multi-disciplinary duets than an addition to his growing catalog of pure solo material. Yet it centrally documents an iterative, systems-based approach to making music that Young has been developing and refining through live performances and improvisations in his studio for close to 3 years. This sonic “system” is not modular but still tactile, performable and tourable, and includes: 3 individual oscillators (sine, square, triangle) tuned microtonally by hand in real time and filtered, amplified surfaces and objects that make up the pieces’ rhythmic foundations, (found) tape loop fragments and EMF signal captured and routed across the tonal and textural signal paths.

Amaro includes contributions from Montreal artists (Deanna Radford, Markus Floats & Ida Toninato) and others based in New York & beyond (Vito Ricci, Dolphin Midwives, Pauline Kim Harris, Tomonari Nishikawa & Johannes Bergmark). The cover visuals come courtesy of frequent collaborators China Marsot-Wood and Thaïla Khampo. It’s an experimental suite of sonic material, adventurous and not over-produced (a trap that Young feels guilty of falling into with his trio Sontag Shogun); neither ambient nor noise, synthesized yet performed in real time as if it was an instrumental record.

“The music on “Nations of I” sprang out of my work for the MAGAM project. The focus remains on idiophone instruments, only this time the marimbas are more prominent than the vibraphone & glockenspiel and the final outcome is a lot more spacious, minimalistic and at times rhythmical (after all, 2 of these Nations suites had, in earlier stages, been used for a butoh and a dance performance respectively).

The cover artwork was based on 500-year-old naval maps from Pîrî Reis’ book “Kitâbı bahriye”.
