Entstanden ist das Projekt laut Begleittext aus einem offenen kreativen Austausch, der ursprünglich in den heimischen Studios der beiden Künstler begann. Mit einer Mischung aus Improvisation und deep listening entwickelte sich eine musikalische Sprache, die geprägt ist von harmonischer Offenheit, Zurückhaltung und einer besonderen Sensibilität für Texturen. Die geografische und symbolische Bedeutung von Thanet, einer Halbinsel im Südosten Englands, spiegelt sich im Albumtitel wider und verweist auf die Idee des Driftens, sowohl im physischen als auch im klanglichen Sinne.

Die Stücke verkörpern eine harmonische und impressionistische Klangwelt. Mit ihrem auf klangliche Breite verzichtenden und gleichsam unvorhersehbaren Aufbau laden sie ein, in die ruhigen, aber markanten Szenarien einzutauchen. Das Album markiert den Auftakt zu einer Serie weiterer Veröffentlichungen, die die kontinuierliche Zusammenarbeit der beiden befreundeten Künstler fortsetzen soll.

Saudade spiegelt eine persönliche wie kreative Übergangsphase wieder und verfolgt das Ziel, eine kohärente Komposition zu schaffen, bei der alle Einzelstücke zu einer stimmigen, durchgehenden Bewegung verschmelzen. Unterstützt wird Fryer nur gelegentlich von seinem langjährigen Freund und Label-Kollegen Adam Coney, der mit seiner Gitarre auf ausgewählten Stücken eine zweite expressive Stimme einbringt. Ansonsten ist das Album laut Label auf das Wesentliche reduziert und bringt dadurch eine intime Atmosphäre hervor – jedes Rascheln der Saiten, jeder Korpusklang ist deutlich präsent und fügt sich nahtlos in die klangliche Struktur des Albums ein. Besonders hervorzuheben ist neben den für erzählerische Tiefe sorgenden Field Recordings Fryers Einsatz des Berimbaus, das seine Faszination für Perkussion verdeutlicht und dem Album eine rhythmische Erdung gibt. Das Album erscheint neben der Vinyl-edition auch digital.

Albums Elemente des Jazz und Avantgarderock mit Folkanleihen und einigem mehr. Eine Besonderheit ist die Zusammenführung von vorkomponierten und mit Bedacht entwickelten Grundstrukturen und relativ spontanen Aufnahmeaktionen, bei denen Coney wesentliche Merkmale je nach Song sowohl im Alleingang als auch mit Band live im Studio ergänzt hat. Der Track “The Close Stage” ist bereits als Single erhältlich. 

Jens L Thomsen is an artist and musician from the Faroe Islands. He has a BA in Music Technology from University of West London as well as an MSc in Acoustics from London South Bank University. His work typically explores the relationship between art and technology. Notable sound installations include NORÐ which was commissioned by the Southbank Centre and exhibited at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and FØROYAR 5.2 which with the use of seismic technology allowed him to play on mountains as if they were instruments. His main artistic outlet is through the project Orka with Francine Perry, which he started 10 years ago by building homemade instruments out of found objects on a farm on the Faroe Islands. Jens spends a lot of time producing in the studio and is credited on close to a hundred releases. At the moment he tours as part of Yann Tiersen’s live band.

Simon Williams is a composer and producer generally to be found where synthetic sounds meet organic performances. As part of electronic group LV Simon’s work has been released on the visionary Hyperdub label as well as Giles Peterson’s Brownswood recordings. Simon’s influences are as numerous as his collaborations which have included Tigran Hamasyan, Spoek Mathambo, Joshua Idehen and Orka to name a few. His magpie-like tendencies have built him a genre-defying sound spanning across musical disciplines. Currently Simon’s returned to an old fascination, writing music for film and incorporating these cinematic sounds into his compositions.” (Threstle Records)

Born in 1966, painter and musician James Johnston is primarily known for his work with his own band Gallon Drunk, as a former member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Faust, Lydia Lunch, and both touring and recording with PJ Harvey – with whom his most recent work has been collaboration on theatre scores including All About Eve. A prolific painter exhibiting regularly, his work has also been used on book covers, as album artwork, and featured in a variety of arts publications, with paintings in international collections – including the collection of the University of Chicago in Paris.

Ross Downes is an artist and musician based in London UK. He studied Fine Art at the Edinburgh College of Art and Goldsmiths college, London. Recent musical activities from Downes have included compositions for large European art installation projects. During 2019 he contributed a piece to Mischa Kabul’s long running installation Res-o-nant at the Jewish Museum, Berlin. In 2018 he composed a lengthy work for his collaboration, with Cologne based, artist Sebastian Freytag on an ambitious light/audio installation titled Sygnal for The Museum Slaskie, Poland. He most recently composed the music for Turner Prize winner Laure Prouvost’s exhibition at the 2020 Sydney Biennale.
