Jede der “Studies” versteht sich, wie man vom Label erfährt, als eigenständige Untersuchung der Spannung zwischen japanischer Tradition und zeitgenössischer, oft urban konnotierter Geräuschkultur. Das Resultat sind dichte, rauschhafte Kompositionen, in denen Feedback, elektronische Texturen und Rhythmen nicht bloß als Stilmittel dienen, sondern als Ausdruck eines Dialogs zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Drei der Stücke sind ausladend lang, die ersten Minuten klingen zunächst verhältnismäßig mild – beinahe angenehm im Ton – bevor sich das Material immer wieder verändert und verdichtet. Wie schon der Titel andeutet, scheinen manche der elektronischen Klänge tierischen Stimmen oder Bewegungen nachzuspüren und eine Assoziation evozieren, die “Animal Magnetism” einen eigentümlich organischen Zug verleiht, der bisweilen an Andrew Liles’ ganz anders geartetes “Animal Magick”-Album denken lässt. Der Klang bleibt dabei klar in der Tradition des japanischen Noise verankert, ist aber zugleich von einer fast komponiert anmutenden Präzision durchzogen. “Animal Magnetism” erscheint bei Urashima Records in einer aufwendig von Lass Marhaug remasterten Edition auf zwei LPs und digital.

Die neuen Ausgaben setzen diesen Ansatz fort, aber mit jeweils eigenem Charakter. Metallische Resonanzen, verzerrte Frequenzen und eruptive Klangkollisionen breiten sich aus, während einige Stücke sich allmählich aus ruhigeren Passagen heraus aufbauen. Gelegentlich tauchen orchestrale oder klavierartige Töne auf, an anderer Stelle brechen raue, pulsierende Wellen mit voller Wucht in den Raum. “The Bell Tolls” auf dem fünften Teil spielt mit fließenden Übergängen zwischen harschem Noise und fast glatten, schimmernden Oberflächen. Volume 6 verstärkt diese Kontraste weiter und fügt neue Schichtungen hinzu, die zwischen dichten, aufgewühlten Strukturen und subtileren Passagen wechseln.

Masami Akita gehört seit den späten 70er-Jahren zu den einflussreichsten Exponenten des sogenannten Japanoise. Mit seiner Arbeit mit Feedback, Elektronik und unkonventionellen Klangquellen hat er die Vorstellung von Noise maßgeblich mit geprägt. “Nine Studies of Ephemeral Resonance” knüpft an seine langjährige Auseinandersetzung mit klanglicher Dichte, Form und Materialität an. Das Album erscheint neben der regulären Vinyl-Edition 99mal in einer Holzbox mit zwei Tapes, die exklusives und nicht im Download erhältliches Studiomaterial enthalten. Das Release enthält ältere Textbeiträge von Jojo Hiroshige (Hijokaidan) und Toshiji Mikawa sowie neue Liner Notes von Lasse Marhaug, der auch das Mastering übernommen hat. Darin heißt es: “In a historical perspective Repo is also special. There were very few noise records that sounded like it in 1989. Albums by other Japanese artists like Hanatarash, Merzbow, Gerogerigegege and Hijokaidan, who despite the more sonic approach of noise to their western contemporaries, all featured more stylistic aspects to their work – tape loops, collage techniques, the use/abuse of conventional instruments, satirical takes on popular music, references to visual art forms. Repo has none of that, it is full-on noise. In this sense this album – and Incapacitants’ overall oeuvre – has stood the test of time incredibly well. It does not feel dated”.

“Purgatory”, das 1992 beim japanischen G.R.O.S.S.-Label erschien und über die Jahre zu einer gesuchten Rarität avancierte, wurde imv origen Jahr von Emanuele Bonini von den Original_Audios remastert und erscheint in einer Auflage von 199 Exemplaren. Das Insert enthält ein Interview mit dem Künstler, das von Satoru Higashiteto für das Bananafish-Magazin geführt und von David Hopkins übersetzt wurde. es ist auch zum Download erhältlich.

Urashima bezeichnen das Tape treffend als “known for its confrontational and irreverent approach to music.
