Wacław Zimpel, der polnische Komponist und Kopf des Ensembles, öffnet hier gemeinsam mit Shackleton, wie es beim Label sinngemäß heißt, einen neuen Raum zwischen kontemplativer Tiefe und rhythmischer Spannung. Während das Original durch seine helle, organische Energie geprägt war, legt diese Version den Fokus stärker auf hypnotische Texturen, dichte Bässe und subtile elektronische Verschiebungen. Insgesamt entsteht ein außergewöhnliches Projekt zweier Künstler, die elektronische Struktur und akustische Virtuosität in präziser Balance halten. “3 – The Shackleton Versions” erscheint als limitierte LP auf gelbem Vinyl und ist auch zum Download erhältlich.

Auf ihrem fünften Album verfeinern Ana Kravanja, Iztok Koren und Samo Kutin ihren kollektiv geprägten Ansatz und lassen fast zwei Dutzend – teils handgefertigte, teils historische – Instrumente in längeren, strukturell offenen Stücken aufeinander treffen. Die bewusst geführte Melodik und das Wechselspiel aus Weite und Verdichtung verleihen den neuen Kompositionen eine neue Tiefe, die sich offen, doch nie beliebig zeigt. Širom balancieren zwischen rustikaler Melodik, dissonanten Texturen und rhythmischer Spannung. Ihre Musik bleibt experimentell, aber klarer konturiert – meditativ, stellenweise fast ritualhaft, ohne je ins Formelhafte abzugleiten.

Mit ihrer eigenständigen Klangsprache schaffen sie einen Raum, in dem Naturbeobachtung, gesellschaftliche Reflexion und persönliche Erfahrung gleichermaßen Platz finden.

Das Album vereint instrumentale Stücke mit walisisch gesungenen Songs und wurde in Kollaboration mit Ursula Harrison (Kontrabass), Amie Huckstep (Altsaxophon) und Lisa Martin (Drums) live im Studio eingespielt. Die Musik verbindet minimalistische Strukturen, improvisierte Elemente und Einflüsse aus der bretonischen Folkmusik mit Momenten klassischer Harfenkunst. Der Titeltrack basiert auf einer walisischen Volksballade über einen Mann, der durch Engelsgesang in einen jahrhundertelangen Schlaf fällt – eine Geschichte zwischen Märchen und Realitätsverlust, die Hafana nach eigenen Worten vor allem wegen ihres “emotionalen Bogens” faszinierte.

Wie es vom Label heißt, steht “Angel” für eine Musik, die bewusst mit Traditionen bricht, ohne sich von ihnen zu lösen – entrückt, rau, zugleich warm und unmittelbar. Das Album erscheint am 26. September beim Glitterbeat-Sublabel tak:til als LP und zum Download.

Inhaltlich, so geht aus dem Begleittext hervor, stellt das Album ist eine sensible und zugleich kraftvolle Reflexion dar über das Wunder des Lebens und zugleich ein Ausdruck der Dankbarkeit und Ehrfurcht für die Verbindung zu Natur und zum Universum. Jeder der neun Tracks spiegelt eine Phase des Lebenszyklus wider – von Geburt und Wachstum über Reife und Verfall bis hin zum Ende, das in Park Jihas Musik stets Hoffnung und Schönheit in Aussicht stellt, und geht man nach den Titeln der einzelnen Songs, so scheint ein besonderer Fokus auf dem frühlingshaften Neubeginn zu liegen.
Minimalistische Muster, fließende Melodien und eine greifbare spirituelle Ausrichtung verleihen dem Werk seine ganz eigene Charakteristik, die mit Begriffen wie “post-klassisch” und ähnlichem allenfalls provisorisch erfasst werden kann. Die bereits veröffentlichte (und dem Datum entsprechend herbstliche) Single “Brown Leaves” fängt dieses Gefühl ein: melancholisch und entrückt, doch zugleich klar, hell, wach und pulsierend. “All Living Things” erscheint am 14. “The Saagara project was first initiated during a jam session in Poland more than a decade ago by Zimpel and one of the most prominent Indian percussionists Gitridhar Udupa (ghatam), and took further shape during his visit to India in 2012. With the 1976 album Shakti with John McLaughlin in mind, particularly its virtuosic blending of Western melodic-rhythmic concepts with Carnatic ones, Zimpel wanted to create something that would continue that ethos but with an individualized approach. His deep fascination with minimalism, tinged with electronics, helped shape the project’s concept as did the grooves and sounds of Carnatic music’s most prominent instruments. In Saagara, these instruments are played by the aforementioned Udupa, as well as Mysore N. Karthik on violin and Aggu Baba (khanjira) and K Raja (thavil) on percussion. Through the ensemble’s collective experimentation, the edgy rhythms of Carnatic music – one of India’s oldest musical traditions – became seamlessly synchronized with Zimpel’s clarinet and electronics and Karthik’s violin parts.

On 3 the music is not as contemplative as it was on the previous two albums. Acidic electronic post-club sounds now counterpoint the traditional instruments, and the instruments themselves are filtered through contemporary processing. [...] Saagara’s 3 is also more studio-based and conceptual. Zimpel devised electronic sequences and then got together in a Warsaw studio with Udupa, who began by adding konnakol (vocal percussion) rhythmic patterns to the sequences. Zimpel’s production grew from there – developing additional electronic textures, manipulating the sound of individual instruments, and deconstructing or reducing the instrument tracks altogether. [...] Saagara’s new album brings the ancient ritual of Carnatic music, a music that carries the listener from one state to another, into a dance with electronic music and its techniques, beats and synthesis. “Something magical is happening on the South Korean music scene, and it isn’t K-Pop. Blow away the froth, and it is soon apparent that in the concert halls and clubs of Seoul and beyond, a febrile music scene is bubbling up. The Dal:um duo are at the forefront of new Korean music, bringing a questing, modernising energy to timeless traditions. Ha Suyean and Hwang Hyeyoung grew up learning formal Korean gugak music, excelling on two different types of zithers: the gayageum and geomungo respectively. But these two young women soon became restless. Dal:um is the sound of 21st century Seoul, where the boundaries of tradition are stretched (and occasionally broken) to create something unique. Dal:um translates as ‘to keep pursuing something’, a name which couldn’t be more apposite. Suyean and Hyeyoung garnered wide acclaim and toured around the world with their debut album, Similar and Different (Tak:til/Glitterbeat, 2021), and with their second album, Coexistence, they are taking another leap forward. Similar and Different was the sound of two musicians pushing and pulling one another. In Coexistence they have become one: one with one another, one with the wider world around them, one with life itself. Stück “Joan”, das auf die Gedicht “A Dream Records” von Allen Ginsberg basiert. Graindorge berichtet: “In this dream, Ginsberg meets Joan in a garden in Mexico City, she is sitting in a garden chair, they are chatting, laughing… and then he realises she is dead and sees her grave. Joan Vollmer died at the age of 28, accidentally murdered by her husband, the writer William Burroughs, while they were under the influence of alcohol and drugs. I felt like dedicating a song to her. I imagine her in limbo not knowing herself if she is still alive. Like a mantra, she repeats the same phrases; the strings become gnarled, both dark and soft”.
