Die norwegische Bassistin Ellen Brekken hat zusammen mit dem Pianisten Espen Berg, dem Saxophonisten Magnus Bakken und Drummer Magnus Sefaniassen Eide ein Jazzquartett formiert, das amerikanische und europäische Traditionen verknüpft. Mitte April erscheint das Debüt “Ambush”. Der Name der Band, deren Mitglieder bereits an bekannten Jazz-Alben mitgewirkt haben, geht auf den Gebrauch von Tonic Water zurück, mit dem britische Kolonialtruppen in Indien der Malaria Herr zu werden versuchten und ist nur ein Beispiel für die augenzwinkernd zweckentfremdende Verwendung militärischer Begriffe zur Beschreibung ihrer Musik. Auch ihre Songs sind nach historischen und oft kriegerischen Ereignissen betitelt, und wenn A Tonic For The Troops jemals ein Buch über sich veröffenlichen sollten, dann wäre eine Graphic Novel im Kooperation mit dem Maler und Kolonial-Cartoonisten Andrew Gilbert ein “Match made in Heaven”.
