Moody Alien, seines Zeichens Thirsty Leaves-Betreiber, MAGAM-Gründer und multimedialer Künstler und Komponist, bringt unter dem Titel “Nations of I” ein neues Album heraus – pünktlich zum zwanzigsten Jubiläum als Musiker und erneut mit einem Hauptfokus auf minimale Kompositionen für Marimbaphon und verwandte Instrumente. Wie oft bei dem in Thessaloniki ansässigen Musiker ist das vordergründig betrachtet fast zaghafte und unscheinbare Wekr voller musikalischer (Steve Reich) und außermusikalischer (Piri Reis, Kurz Vonnegut) Anspielungen. “Nations of I” erscheint als LP bei Thirsty Leaves Music und ist zudem als Kombi mit diversen anderen Titel des Labels erhältlich.

“The music on “Nations of I” sprang out of my work for the MAGAM project. The focus remains on idiophone instruments, only this time the marimbas are more prominent than the vibraphone & glockenspiel and the final outcome is a lot more spacious, minimalistic and at times rhythmical (after all, 2 of these Nations suites had, in earlier stages, been used for a butoh and a dance performance respectively).
The album features contributions from Jeremy Young (Montreal), Markus Reineke (Wuppertal) and Vasilis Bacharidis (Thessaloniki) – thanks guys! The cover artwork was based on 500-year-old naval maps from Pîrî Reis’ book “Kitâbı bahriye”. The album title was initially inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s concept of “a nation of two” – a concept that led to some thoughts of my own, hints to which you can discover on the release page if you’re curious enough to drop by and have a listen…
