Der schwedische Bassist Johan Berthling, bekannt von verschiedenen Projekten wie Tape, Fire! oder Time is a Mountain und jüngst durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Oren Ambarchi und Andreas Werliin, bringt Ende April sein erstes Soloalbum heraus. Der “Björnhorn” betitelte Longplayer enthält Berthlings gleichnamige Suite in sechs Sätzen sowie das Stück “For Turiya” aus der Feder des bekannten amerikanischen Kollegen Charlie Haden, das bereits im Stream zu hören ist – alle in einem Klangbild, bei dem der Bass einen tiefen, summenden, dunkelwarmen Charakter erhält. Das Album erscheint auf 50 LPs, 100 CDs sowie digital bei Thanatosis.

“Since first hearing him as a member of Tape in the early 2000s, Johan Berthling’s double bass sound has always left the impression of deep richness and melodicism no matter how far afield the music was taken. This wonderful solo recording continues to mine that vein, ranging from the fantastically grainy and luscious arco work on the first track, so vibrant and rhythmically compelling, to the lovely swipes and plucks of ‘Björnhorn II’ (oddly recalling, to this listener, Abdul Wadud), to the fine cover of Charlie Haden’s ‘For Turiya’, to the even more Hadenesque’ Björnhorn V’, the journey is one of deep consideration and evinces a musician with a superb ear and technique. The rapid back and forth sawing of the final piece brings the recording to a satisfying, if questioning, close.
