Das bisweilen wie eine volle Band klingende Soloprojekt Broken Candles von Luca Corda meldet sich mit seinem neuen Album-Tape “Falling Asleep in the Sky” zurück, das am 25. Oktober 2024 bei Cruel Nature Records erscheint. Es folgt auf das vor mittlerweile vier Jahren vorgelegte Debüt. In den zehn Tracks des neuen Albums verbinden sich sanfte E-Gitarrenklänge, Piano und Geigen, oftmals in ausgedehnten instrumental gehaltenen Passagen, getragen von treibendem Schlagzeug und Bass. Das Herzstück der Songs bleibt jedoch der melancholische Gesang in Cordas markanter Kopfstimme. Die Texte drehen sich immer wieder um Themen der Hoffnung, der Liebe und des Schmerzes, eingebettet in eine gelungene Mixtur aus Rock und Singer-Songwriter-Elementen. Aufgenommen wurde das Album in einem kleinen Haus auf einem Berg in der portugiesischen Region Penamacor, wobei die Violine auf einigen Stücken von Jake Slocombe aus Bristol beigesteuert wurde.

“Broken Candles is the slow burning solo project of Luca Corda, which first took shape whilst traveling and working in Canada around 2018. A handful of self released early demos and a lo-fi EP ‘When We Get There’ appeared online once Luca returned to Europe and settled briefly in Lisbon, Portugal. Later escaping to a central Portuguese countryside village, he recorded his fragile debut LP ‘Left With This Feeling’ in a friend’s barn full of tools and junk using some simple recording equipment, eventually releasing the album via Cruel Nature in 2020. Since this debut release, Broken Candles has remained quietly active, continuing to write songs, record and perform around Portugal. In 2023 work began on ‘Falling Asleep in the Sky’. As an artist who has always found motivation through evolution, the new album sees Broken Candles taking a more expansive approach to the recording process. In contrast to the mostly acoustic debut, on this album we find ourselves immersed in soft electric guitar tones, piano, violins, played out instrumental sections and soundscapes, underpinned by driving drum kit and bass for most of the ten tracks”.
