Spheres Collapser: Neue LP von Stephen O’Malley

Am 27. Februar erscheint mit “Spheres Collapser” ein neues Album von Stephen O’Malley. Die Veröffentlichung umfasst zwei langformatige Kompositionen für Pfeifenorgel, komponiert von O’Malley und eingespielt gemeinsam mit Kali Malone und Frederikke Hoffmeier. Aufgenommen wurde das Material an den historischen Orgeln der Église Saint-François im Schweizerischen Lausanne.

Die Stücke gehen aus der Werkreihe “Les Sphères (effondrez-les)” hervor, die O’Malley ursprünglich für eine choreografische Zusammenarbeit entwickelte. Die hier vorliegenden Arbeiten konzentrieren sich ausschließlich auf die Orgel als Instrument und auf deren räumliche und klangliche Möglichkeiten. Die Aufnahmen wurden von Stephen O’Malley gemischt, das Mastering und der Lackschnitt erfolgten durch Rashad Becker. Die LP erscheint mit Artwork von O’Malley und Malone in zwei Vinylvarianten bei XKatedral in Koproduktion mit La Becque Editions, ergänzt wird die Veröffentlichung in der digitalen Version durch Radio-Edits sowie einen begleitenden Essay von Mats Almegård.

Kali Malone in der Berliner Gedächtniskirche

Im Rahmen des kommenden CTM Festivals tritt Kali Malone in der bekannten Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin auf und spielt einige neue und eventuell auch ältere Stücke auf der dortigen Orgel. Bei einigen Stücken wird sie von Stephen O’Malley (SUNN O))), KTL, Khanate u.a.) am selben Instrument begleitet. Das Konzert findet wenige Tage vor der Veröffentlichung ihres kommenden Albums “All Live Long” statt. Es ist nicht im Festivalpass enthalten.

Aus dem Programmtext: “The works of composer and sound artist Kali Malone implement specific tuning systems in minimalist structures for pipe organ, choir, chamber music ensembles, and electroacoustic formats. Malone’s compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation in repetitive motions and extended durations, emitting distinct emotive, dynamic, and affective hues which bring forth a stunning depth of focus”.

All Life Long: Neue LP von Kali Malone im Februar

Am 9. Februar erscheint das neue Album “All Life Long” der in Schweden lebenden Komponistin und Musikerin Kali Malone. Es enthält zwölf Kompositionen für Orgel, Chor und Bläser und wurde an verschiedenen Orten in den Jahren 2020 bis 2023 aufgenommen: Die Choralstücke wurden vom Macadam Ensemble unter Dirigenz von Etienne Ferschaud in der Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-L’Immaculée-Conception in Nantes eingespielt, die Bläserparts wurden vom Quintett Anima Brass im New Yorker Bunker Studio aufgenommen, die Orgelparts stammen von Malone selbst in Zusammenarbeit mit Stephen O’Malley und entstanden an den entsprechenden Orgeln der Église Saint-François in Lausanne, des Orgelpark in Amsterdam und des Malmö Konstmuseum in der schwedischen Stadt. Es sind die ersten orgelbasierten Aufnahmen der Musikerin seit ihrem 2019 veröffentlichten Album “The Sacrificial Code”, der Titeltrack ist sowohl in einer orgelbasierten als auch in einer Vokalversion enthalten. Das Album erscheint als Doppel-LP, CD und digital bei Ideologic Organ.

“Kali Malone composes with a rare clarity of vision. Her music is patient and focused, built on a foundation of evolving harmonic cycles that draw out latent emotional resonances. Time is a crucial factor: letting go of expectations of duration and breadth offers a chance to find a space of reflection and contemplation. In her hands, experimental reinterpretations of centuries-old polyphonic compositional methods become portals to new ways of perceiving sound, structure, and introspection. Though awe-inspiring in scope, the most remarkable thing about Malone’s music is the intimacy stirred by the close listening it encourages. [...] Over the course of twelve pieces, harmonic themes and patterns recur, presented in altered forms and for varied instrumentation. They emerge and reemerge like echoes of their former selves, making the familiar uncanny. Propelled by lungs and breath rather than bellows and oscillators, Malone’s compositions for choir and brass take on expressive qualities that complicate the austerity that has defined her work, introducing lyricism and the beauty of human fallibility into music that has been driven by mechanical processes. At the same time, the works for organ, performed by Malone with additional accompaniment by Stephen O’Malley on four different organs dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, underscore the mighty, spectral power that those rigorous operations can achieve. All Life Long simmers in an ever-shifting tension between repetition and variation. The pieces for brass, organ, and voice are alternated asymmetrically, providing nearly continuous timbral fluctuation across its 78-minute runtime even as thematic material reiterates. Each composition’s internal framework of fractal pattern permutations has the paradoxical effect of creating anticipated keystone moments of dramatic reverie and lulling the listener into believing in an illusory endlessness. On an even more granular level, the historical meantone tuning systems of each organ used, and the variable intonation of brass and voice, provide further points of emotional excavation within the harmony. [...] This is not music of praise, or of spiritual revelation, but it is an artistic enactment of translating the indescribable. It carries the gravity of liturgical chant, and its fixation on the infinite, but draws its weight from the earthly realm of human experience. A music that draws the listener into the present moment where they can discover themselves within the interwoven musical patterns that can come to resemble the passage of days, weeks, years, a lifetime”. Sunn O))) und Kali Malone im Berghain Berlin

Im September sind Sunn O))) und Kali Malone live in der Panoramabar des Berliner Berghain zu sehen. Das bekannte Drone Metal-Duo wird diesmal in seiner reinen, aus Stephen O’Malley und Greg Anderson bestehenden Kernbesetzung auftreten, die Reduktions aufs Wesentliche folgt laut Band aber einem bewussten Konzept, dass unter dem Begriff Shoshin (初心) gefasst wird. Das japanische Wort ist ein Begriff des Zen-Buddhismus und umschreibt eine Art der Unerfahrenheit und

zugleich des offenen, ambitionierten Anfängertums – man darf sich darunter wohl (auch) so etwas wie (nicht zwangsläufig stilistisch zu verstehende) eine Rückkehr in die Anfangstage des Duos vorstellen, als O’Mallay und Anderson ihre ersten Konzerte im Alleingang spielten. Eröffnet wird der Abend von der in Stockholm lebenden amerikanischen Komponistin Kali Malone, an deren aktuellem Album “Does Spring Hide Its Joy” (Ideologic Organ 2023) u.a. auch O’Malley als Gitarrist mitwirkte. Das Konzert wird von CTM veranstaltet.

Kali Malone: Neues Album mit Stephen O’Malley und Lucy Railton

Ideologic Organ haben gerade ein neues, drei Stunden Spieldauer umfassendes Album der Organistin, Klangkünstlerin und Komponistin Kali Malone herausgebracht. Das Material, bei dem Malone mit Sinus-Oszillatoren arbeitet und von Stephen O’Malley (Gitarre) und Lucy Railton (Cello) begleitet wird, entstand vor knapp drei Jahren im Berliner Funkhaus und avancierte seitdem zum Stoff mehrerer Klanginstallationen. “The music is a study in harmonics and non-linear composition with a heightened focus on just intonation and beating interference patterns”, heißt es beim Label. “Malone’s experience with pipe organ tuning, harmonic theory, and long durational composition provide prominent points of departure for this work. Her nuanced minimalism unfolds an astonishing depth of focus and opens up contemplative spaces in the listener’s attention”. Malone selbst

hebt den Aspekt der Zeiterfahrung, speziell zu Beginn der Pandemie, hervor: “Like most of the world, my perception of time went through a significant transformation during the pandemic confinements of spring 2020. Unmarked by the familiar milestones of life, the days and months dripped by, instinctively blending with no end in sight. Time stood still until subtle shifts in the environment suggested there had been a passing. Memories blurred non-sequentially, the fabric of reality deteriorated, unforeseen kinships formed and disappeared, and all the while, the seasons changed and moved on without the ones we lost. Playing this music for hours on end was a profound way to digest the countless life transitions and hold time together”. Das Album erscheint als 3-LP und 3-CD sowie in allen digitalen Formaten. Die Vinyl-Edition ist beim Label bereits vergriffen, dürfte aber bei einigen Record Stores noch erhältlich sein.

Velocity of Sleep: Reissue des Debüts von Kali Malone

Gut zwei Jahre nach ihrem vielfach gelobten “The Sacrificial Code” bringt die anfangs auch auch unter dem Namen Medicine Bow bekannte Komponistin und Organistin Kali Malone ihre erste längere Arbeit “Velocity of Sleep” bei XKatedral neu auf Vinyl heraus. Das Album, dessen drei Tracks mit einem kleinen Ensemble eingespielt wurden und neben Tapetechnik und Elektronik auf dem Einsatz von Streichern, zwei Gongs und einer Schalenhalslaute basiert, wurde vor etwas mehr als vier Jahren in knapper Auflage bei XKatedral und Bleak Environment veröffentlicht und war lange Zeit vergriffen.

DREW MCDOWALL: Agalma

Der seit Jahren in Brooklyn lebende gebürtige Schotte Drew McDowall hat auf seinem inzwischen vierten Soloalbum „Agalma“, das urspünglich “Ritual Music” heißen sollte, das Klangspektrum erweitert und hat in einem noch stärkeren Maße als auf dem Vorgänger akustische Instrumente in das Klangbild integriert. McDowall ist in den letzten Jahren mit einer Vielzahl von Künstlern aufgetreten, hat vor zwei Jahren zusammen mit Hiro Kone Georges Bataille gehuldigt und auf „Agalma“ wirken dann auch eine ganze Reihe von Gastmusikern mit.

„Agalma I (Folding)“ klingt, als würden Atemgeräusche von einem Xylophon begleitet. Das erinnert als seien Shackletons Aufnahmen mit Ernesto Tomasini von Martin Denny gemixt worden. Man muss auch an den Einsatz akustischer Instrumente bei Coil denken, nachdem sie sich als Liveband neu ge- und erfunden hatten. Auf dem zweiten Teil ist Caterina Barbieri zu hören: sphärische Ätherklänge, wortloses, fast sakrales Singen, Harfen, flächige Sounds. Das Stück ist geprägt von einer seltsamen Entrücktheit. An Teil 3 ist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe aka Lichens beteiligt und hier gehen Streicher mit flirrenden Klängen eine Synthese ein, hier trifft HÖH auf Mirror und Richard Skelton. Der vierte Teil, ebenfalls mit Lowe, knüpft mit seinen leicht atonale Streichermomenten, dem Knirschen, Knarzen und Pulsieren daran an. Lowe klingt, als sei er ein elisabethanischer Chorknabe, der John Dee rezitiert. Auch auf dem fünften Teil (mit Kali Malone) hört man entrückte Stimmen und getragene Orgelpassagen. Die langsamen Drones auf “Agalma VI” erinnern an Black Light Districts „Refusal of Leave to Land“. Es ist beeindruckend, wie das Stück im Verlauf immer dichter wird und kaum greifbare Stimmen integriert werden. Auf dem siebten Teil, an dem u.a. der saudische Produzent MSLYMA beteiligt ist, hört man orientalische Flöten und bearbeitete Stimmen, die denken lassen, Peter Christopherson, habe für seinen The Threshold HouseBoys Choir Sänger aus dem Nahen Osten verpflichtet. Gegen Ende des Albums wird “Agalma I” erneut aufgegriffen, diesmal dominiert von Maralie Armstrong-Rials opernhaftem Gesang. Das Schlussstück „Abandoned Object“ erinnert vielleicht noch am ehesten an die eher industriell klingenden früheren Aufnahmen.

Das ist Geräuschmusik jenseits aller Genregrenzen – und Begrenzungen und ein Album, das man im Regal sicher neben Werke von Cyclobe stellen könnte. Sicher ein Höhepunkt des doch so seltsamen Jahres 2020. (MG)

Agalma: Drew McDowall mit neuem Album im September

Benannt nach einem altgriechischen Wort für Votivgabe und ursprünglich unter dem Arbeitstitel “Ritual Music” konzipiert, hat der in New York lebende schottische Musiker Drew McDowall ein kollaboratives Album fertiggestellt, an dem zahlreiche internationale Musiker beteiligt sind – Kali Malone und Catarina Barbieri sind nur die hierzulande bekanntesten. “Agalma” ist ein klanglich wie emotional facettenreiches Album, McDowall selbst betrachtet es als sein bisher liturgischstes und am weitesten vom Industrial entferntes Werk. Teil des Albums sind Fotografien und Designs der Künstlerin Caroline Schub.
“Named after an ancient Greek word for votive offering, Agalma exudes a hooded, devotional aura, creaking and keeling under vast rafters of stone, stained glass, and shredded wires. It’s a music of majesty and mystery but also modernity, McDowall’s refined modular system shape-shifting strings, piano, pipe organ, and choral masses into disorienting synthetic mirages of the sacred. [...] As a career collaborator himself, with stints in Coil, Psychic TV, and countless other shorter-lived partnerships, it’s telling that McDowall chose this project to gather such an impressive spectrum of peers. Humanbeast vocalist Maralie Armstrong-Rial, Saudi producer MSYLMA, and warped futurist beat-makers Bashar Suleiman and Elvin Brandhi cameo across the album’s 42 minutes, contouring McDowall’s nuanced negative spaces with shudders, shadows, and shivering flickers of serenity. Each of them shines in their spotlight, elevating these elusive alchemical states into surreal revelations of texture and transcendence. McDowall’s original working title for the record is revealing: Ritual Music. He speaks of his creative practice in ceremonial terms, negating binaries by seeking the middle path to a numinous equilibrium that erases the distinction between the inner and outer worlds. These compositions feel similarly processional and intuitive, at the crossroads of holiness and hallucination, the sacred vertigo of yawning naves rising into untouchable night skies.

It’s a vision of industrial music as enigma and invocation, cryptic hymnals of shrouded beauty summoned in catacombs and crumbling cathedrals. Despite its depths, Agalma is also an album of immediacy and emotion. Celestial laments of and for times of unrest and suffering. McDowall characterizes his initial intention for this music as an to attempt to convey experiences he felt incapable of putting into words: “To try and approach sublimity, or at least acknowledge it in some way.” Agalma more than acknowledges the ineffable – it embodies it.” (Dais Records)
