Die ursprünglich aus dem Doom- und Sludge Metal stammende japanische Band Boris, die seit langem stilistisch kaum einfacher einzuordnen ist als beispielsweise Ulver, bringt Ende Januar ein neues Album mit dem Titel “W” heraus. Es erscheint diesmal in allen gängigen Formaten bei Sacred Bones. Bereits erschienen (und ohne Zusammenhang zum Album stehend) ist die digitale Single “Noël”, auf der Boris den Song “Pardon?” von Lauren Auder & Dviance und Wham!s bekannten Hit “Last Christmas” neu und wie es scheint nicht einmal in parodierender Absicht interpretieren.

Die Band bezeichnet das Release als “a Christmas present for everyone who lives with the various restrictions stemming from COVID-19. Here in Japan, it is customary to give gifts at Christmas. We hope this Christmas will be the ‘Last Christmas’ of COVID-19″. Das kommende Album lotet weiteres musikalisches Neuland aus und ist Boris’  erste Veröffentlichung auf dem New Yorker Label. “Ever since the beginning, the members of Boris have explored their own vision of “heavy” with a unique methodology and stance that could almost be called aloof. A slender female guitarist who sings dusky melodies, a shadowy vocalist swaying with a modified guitar/bass double neck, and a drummer with a gong at his back who at times cries out both curses and supplications as he presides over the ritual.

Though Boris adheres to an unrelenting heaviness in everything they do, “thunderous roars”  and “explosive noise” are too light of words for their singular musicality that can’t be confined to a set genre or style.
