Unter dem Namen Voice & Strings & Timpani bringen Gitarrist Stephan Meidell und Drummer Øyvind Hegg-Lunde, bekannt als Strings & Timpani, dieser Tage ein gemeinsames Album heraus, dessen musikalisches Terrain nur ungenau mit Nachbarregionen wie Jazz, (Post-)Rock, Neue Musik und Free Folk umschrieben ist. Auf ihrem neuen Album haben die beiden ihr Ensemble zu einem Sextett aufgestockt und Kollegen aus ihrem Bergener Umfeld mitwirken lassen, darunter bekannte Kollegen wie Stein Urheim und Mitglieder von renommierten Acts wie Building Instrument und Super Heavy Metal. Die beiden Vokalistinnen Mari Kvien Brunvoll (von den erwähnten Building Instrument) und Eva Pfitzenmaier, die beide auch diverse Instrumentalparts beisteuern, verpassen der Musik mit ihren rhythmischen, den Gesangstechniken der Minimal Music geschulten Lautmalereien eine Note, die sich von bisherigen Arbeiten Meidells und Hegg-Lundes unterscheidet.“The idea for this project was mine and Øyvind’s [...]. We wanted to write music for us together with friends and colleagues in Bergen, musicians who inspire us and are a part of the same milieu that have some of the same attitudes towards music making: what I like to call a communal approach to playing. The sum of the music that comes out is the essential part; making music together, not impressing through individual virtuosic skills in the traditional sense. We do still strongly believe in the individual voices, but it’s the totality of those voices together that is most important to us. This is at the core of our music making, and especially for this project. Me and Øyvind stand firmly as the founders and composers of the project and the music, but at the same time we want each individual voice to be heard.
