Die 26-minütige Veröffentlichung verbindet treibende Bass- und Synthielinien mit lakonischen Texten über alltägliche Ereignisse und flüchtige Begegnungen. Kleinman beschreibt in einfachen, direkten Worten eine einsame, zugleich poetisch verklärte Wirklichkeit, in der sich Melancholie und Humor berühren. “DEMO 1″ wurde fast vollständig von Kleinman selbst aufgenommen. Live wird das Material von einer siebenköpfigen Band umgesetzt, darunter Emily Sherman an Synthies und Isabelle Viengxay, die auch einen der Songs beisteuert. “DEMO 1″ erscheint als LP und Download.

All dies spiegelt sich auch in der Coil’schen Discography wider, die ein manchmal schwer durchschaubares rhizomatisches Geflecht ist. „Coil historiography can often be complex and impenetrable, a confusing warren of CDRs, alternate versions, live recordings and so on“, hieß es jüngst noch in einer Rezension von „Black Antlers“. Man kann sich etwa fragen, was man zu den „regulären“, „offiziellen“ Alben zählt, gehören dazu (auch) die, die in den 90ern unter verschiedenen Projektnamen erschienen, was ist mit „Queens Of The Circulating Library“, das einzige ohne Sleazy entstandene Album?  Und was hat das alles mit „Black Antlers“ zu tun?

Nachdem sich Coil mit Hilfe Thighpaulsandras als Liveband neu (er-)fanden, hatte jede Tour eine andere Setlist, eine andere musikalische Ausrichtung: “From 1999 to 2003, Coil was ‘like a snake shedding its skin,’ transforming every six months into something ‘completely different.’”, heißt es von Labelseite. Auf diesen Touren verkauften Coil CD-Rs mit neuem Material, “The Remote Viewer” oder eben “Black Antlers”, das 2004 während der sogenannten „Even An Evil Fatigue“-Tour, die durch sechs Städte führte, erhältlich war. Der Verfasser dieser Zeilen erinnert sich noch, wie er im (ursprünglichen) Londoner Rough Trade-Shop am Nachmittag vor dem Auftritt Coils im Ocean Club, ein Exemplar des Albums fand und mit einem Freund das bis dahin unbekannte Material, das die Basis des Auftritts bilden sollte, hörte.

„Black Antlers“ ist verglichen mit Alben wie „Musick To Play In The Dark“ wesentlich weniger glatt produziert und dem Material haftet durchaus ein Moment des Unfertigen an. Jonathan Dean stellte damals auf Brainwashed fest: „In fact, the barebones packaging and low-fidelity recording of Black Antlers leads me to suspect that it is nothing but a glorified concert rehearsal captured on record. According to various sources, Coil have plans to re-record and re-mix this material, and will eventually give it an official release. Therefore, I should probably withhold final judgment on these songs. However, it’s hard not to notice the under-produced, impromptu nature of the music and vocals.“  Auch nach der neu abgemischten und leicht veränderten Wiederveröffentlichung als reguläre (Doppel-)CD im Jahr 2006 betonte ein Rezensent den „low key status“.

Das Album beginnt mit „The Gimp (Sometimes)“, das eine Überarbeitung eines Stücks ist, das Coil ursprünglich zu einem People Like Us-Album beigesteuert hatten. Zu an- und abschwellenden minimalistischen elektronischen Passagen spricht Balance Zeilen wie „Sometimes I hurt myself/Sometimes I hate myself“, die schon damals in all ihrer Offenheit beklemmend waren. Am Ende des Stücks hört man ihn eine leicht dissonante Melodie auf einem Eierschäler spielen. Überhaupt gelang es Coil in den letzten Jahren ihrer Existenz fast mühelos Elektronik und akustische Elemente zu verschmelzen. Das zentrale Stück des Albums ist sicherlich „Sex With Sun Ra (Part One-Saturnalia)“, eine Beschreibung einer (fiktiven) Begegnung mit dem großen Exzentriker: „Sun Ra was here in his element/He invited me back for a ride/I smiled, agreed, and we left for the place/That is full of the reasons for time and for space/He said he was leaving last tide“. Zu den reduzierten elektronischen Passagen kommt die von Tom Edwards gespielte Marimba hinzu. Die prophetische oder einfach nur sachlich korrekte Aussage „Most accidents occur at home“ lässt einen natürlich erschauern. Das an den alten Freund Marc Almond anspielende„Wraiths And Strays“ hieß ursprünglich „Radio Weston“ (wie auf der Ansage auf dem „Live In Porto“-Bootleg zu hören ist), weil Sleazy damals viele Sachen aus dem Radio aufnahm und verwendete. “Wraiths And Strays” basiert dann auch auf einem  Sample von King Of Woolworths. Dem weitgehend instrumentalen Stück, live in Paris aufgenommen (die CD-R enthielt eine Version aus Montreal), haftet etwas Mysteriöses, Unheimliches an und ist das vielleicht atmosphärischste Stück des Albums. Coils nur aus Gesang, Marimba und etwas dissonanter Elektronik am Ende bestehende Interpretation von „All The Pretty Little Horses“ ist verglichen mit Current 93s Version skelettierter und reduzierter. Die neue Version von „Teenage Lightning” setzt im Gegensatz zu der Ursprungsversion auf “Love’s Secret Domain” weniger auf Rhythmus und hat fast schon einen Folkcharakter. Etwas aus dem Rahmen fällt das treibende Titelstück, eine Coverversion eines Stücks von Bam Bam. Die drei Bonusstücke sind Remixe, Collagen, die Sleazy mit Danny Hyde abgemischt hat.

Trotz den angesprochenen Momenten des Unfertigen kann man vielleicht “Sex With Sun Ra” zitierend sagen: “I dream of colour music/And the intricacies of the machines that make it possible”. (MG)

Über sein Solodebüt „Collapse“ konnte man hier lesen: „Der hier musikalisch umgesetzte Zusammenbruch lässt wenig Gutes erahnen, aber mit McDowall hat man zumindest einen versierten Chronisten des Untergangs gefunden. “. Dem 2020 erschienenen Album „Agalma“ wurde attestiert: „Das ist Geräuschmusik jenseits aller Genregrenzen – und Begrenzungen und ein Album, das man im Regal sicher neben Werke von Cyclobe stellen könnte.“

Das nun fünfte Album „A Thread, Silvered and Trembling“ setzt einen etwas anderen Fokus als die vorherigen Alben, ist stark beeinflusst von McDowalls Interesse an „pibroch“, Musik für einen einzelnen Dudelsack, die traditionell für Klagelieder und der Ehrung von Toten verwendet wird. Auf diesem Album dienten Cello, Geige, Bratsche, Harfe und Waldhorn sowie Stimmen, die auf der Albumrückseite „The Ghosts Who Refuse To Rest“ zugeschrieben werden, als Klangquelle(n).

Aus und mit diesem akustischen Instrumentarium kreiert McDowall vier Stücke Elektroakustik von zeitloser Schönheit: Das Album wird eröffnet von „Out Of Strength Comes Sweetness“ („out of the strong came forth sweetness“, sang John Balance auf “Ostia”) und verweist auf Lyle’s Golden Syrup und (damit) auf das Alte Testament, anspielend auf die Geschichte von Samson und dem von ihm getöteten Löwen und das Rätsel, das er den Philistern stellte: „And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.“  Das Stück klingt fast schwerelos mit einzelnen Tönen, zu denen ein melodischer Drone hinzukommt. Das fast 15-minütige „And Lions Will Sing With Joy“ ist noch dronelastiger, scheint aus vielen Schichten zu bestehen. Das ist leicht elegische, getragene Musik, die anfangs auch leichte Dissonanzen enthält, aber gerade in der zweiten Hälfte dominieren melodische Passagen, die zum Teil an ein Spinett denken lassen. Auf „In Wound And Water“ ist vielleicht am klarsten das Ausgangsinstrument zu erkennen: Hier erklingt die Harfe und weckt Assoziationen an in einem Eispalast residierende Personen. Im weiteren Verlauf verdichtet sich das Stück. Der letzte Track „A Dream Of A Cartographic Membrane Dissolves“ besteht aus harmonischen, teils flirrenden Drones und den Stimmen der oben genannten “Geister”,  die dem Stück etwas Mysteriöses verleihen. Dieses Album kann beim Zuhörenden durchaus „trembling“ auslösen. Vielleicht ist “A Thread, Silvered and Trembling” die bislang stärkste Veröffentlichung des in New York lebenden Schotten. (MG)

His latest work, A Thread, Silvered and Trembling, both incorporates and transforms these elements via exploratory electronic processing, weaving an electro-acoustic tapestry of strings, shudders, voids, and voices, alternately disembodied and displaced. Co-produced with engineer Randall Dunn at Circular Ruin Studios in Brooklyn, the collection’s four pieces capture McDowall at his most elevated and elusive, in thrall to “the ineffable – that which refuses to be spoken.”

McDowall’s palette here is unusually eclectic, sourced from a dynamic orchestral ensemble arranged by Brent Arnold and comprised of cello, viola, violin, harp (Marilu Donovan of LEYA), and french horn. Ebbing between shrouded electronics and enigmatic, sometimes spectralist orchestration, the album moves with a seething, simmering energy, surging into elegant, uneasy crescendos. The first two pieces are inspired by a liberatory hijacking and inversion of a grim biblical story (and by a cryptic and strange UK simple syrup branding). Opener “Out of Strength Comes Sweetness” shivers with short echo and resonant pads, before shifting into the album’s centerpiece: the 14-minute saga “And Lions Will Sing with Joy.” A murmuring electrical storm of keening strings and disorienting drones gradually grows darker and denser, until suddenly there’s a crack in the clouds, revealing mutated choral voices and sparkling harp. McDowall describes the track as “an incantation to help usher in a break, and a new beginning.”

The record’s latter half evokes a deep untamed animism shot through with spiraling radiance. “In Wound and Water” sways with harp, plucked strings and eerie cello undertows while lush layers of disorientated electronics hang in the dusk. There is no resolution, only a faint gradient of fragile dissipation, leading into the album’s harrowing and climactic closer, “A Dream of a Cartographic Membrane Dissolves.” Processed voices (credited on the liner notes to “The Ghosts Who Refuse to Rest”) contort, whisper, and gather as the rest of the ensemble sharpens, poising to strike. Then it does – grand, tragic stabs of strings and horns lashing the sky, storming heaven by force.

The fallout is poetic and inevitable, raining embers into a dark sea. But the journey and catharsis of A Thread linger long after it goes silent. Like so much of McDowall’s multifaceted catalog, this is music of immanence and alchemy, attuned equally to the sacred and the profane, to the tile and the mosaic.”

irritierende Verschwommenhait annimmt und so einem allzu verlässlichen Realitätseffekt entgegenwirkt. Inhaltlich böte das Album Stoff für manch einen halbdunkel ausgeleuchteten Abel Ferrara-Film, vom Label heißt es: “Lyrically, the record revisits the project’s perennial fascinations: twisted lust, cheap thrills, dirty money, doomed delinquents, and ruined romance amid the creeps and cracked dreamers of gritty city voids”. einmal als Eurodisco bezeichnet wurde und dem gerne auch diePet Shop Boys zugerechnet wurden, deren 1990 in die Charts gekommener Klassiker “Being Boring” hier zusammen mit Sänger Jake Shears gecovert wird. Weitere Gäste sind in der einen oder anderen Form beteiligt, namentlich Nicholas Weiss, Joel Ford, Nightfeelings, ,Danian Tylor, Lars Stalfors, Nick Launay und die kanadische Sängerin Cecile Believe. Das Minialbum erscheint digital mit Artwork von Martin Falck und ist über die gängigen Streamingdienste erhältlich.

Am 15. März 2024 erscheinen die Aufnahmen als Doppel-CD und als Dreifach-Vinyl (in verschiedenen Farben).

“Recorded primarily at their home studio in Chiswick, London on the eve of a permanent relocation to the small seaside town of Weston-Super- Mare, the collection has long loomed as a pivotal and pinnacle work in the group’s discography, but has never been officially reissued, or repressed on vinyl. Time has only ripened its tapestry of regal strangeness.

Arranged sequentially in tribute to the equinoxes and solstices, ‘Moon’s Milk’ captures Coil at a revelatory crossroads, leaning deeper into improvisation, spontaneity, and sound design. “Moon’s Milk or Under an Unquiet Skull” initiates the proceedings on ‘Spring Equinox’, a two-part netherworld organ séance woven from vocal drones, cathedral keys, seasick strings, and opiated undertow. From there, ‘Summer Solstice’ skews lighter but no less incantational, with Balance embracing his voice- as-instrument across lucid dream torch songs (“Bee Stings”), purgatorial spoken word (“Glowworms/Waveforms”), sultry chamber pieces (“Summer Substructures”), and falsetto ravings (“A Warning From The Sun (For Fritz)”).

‘Autumn Equinox’ exudes more of a pensive and twilit mood, from the Rose McDowall-sung neofolk ballad “Rosa Decidua” (“I hear your voice sing near to me / I’ve put away the poisoned chalice (for now) / And lie down amongst the flowerbeds”) to hall-of-lords hallucination “The Auto- Asphyxiating Hierophant” to the liminal string-plucked classic “Amethyst Deceivers,” featuring excellent alien guitar by Breeze layered with Balance’s oft-quoted couplet: “Pay your respects to the vultures / For they are your future.”

The album’s final chapter, ‘Winter Solstice’, is its most swooning, remote, and ceremonial. Opener “A White Rainbow” stirs strings, layered choral vocals, and shivering rhythm into an imploding burial hymn. “North” oscillates bleakly, a ghost in the machine murmuring opaque prophecy (“This black dog has no owner / This black dog has no odour”), while “Magnetic North” is its inverse, a guided meditation of gently flickering software and surreal chakra poetics (“Red rose filling the skull / Yellow cube in the lower pelvis / Silver moon crescent below the navel”). The suite fades to grey with a traditional English carol (“Christmas Is Now Drawing Near”), rendered like an executioner’s song by Rose McDowall’s doomed, beautiful voice.

The Dais box set includes the entirety of the rare ‘Moon’s Milk Bonus Disc’ CD-R / 2019 Threshold Archives Copal CD, which includes three collaborations with Thighpaulsandra. This material is as rich and intoxicating as the previous four phases, ranging from electro-acoustic singing bowl rituals (“Copal”) to dissonant electronic recitations of visionary Angus Maclise poetry (“The Coppice Meat”) to ominous classical melancholia (“Bankside”). Once again, Coil confirm the vastness of their confounding, infinite alchemy, explored and refined across decades of experimentation – both sonic and bodily. From post-industrial to post-everything, theirs is an art untethered, in the wilds of its own design.

Die beiden Songs “Don’t take the light away” (der schon etwas länger zum Download erhältlich war) und “Remember me” durchzieht eine leidenschaftliche Melancholie, deren beinahe hymnische Gesangsmelodie eine starke Ohrwurmqualität entfaltet und doch weit entfernt ist von jeder schlagerhaften Trivialität.
